Having traveled on a number of cruise ships prior to the Holland America Volendam there are a number of items I wish to high lite, firstly the ship is in need of a spruce up, looking tired in some areas. The food both at the Main Dining room and the Lido restaurant was very good, Tried the upmarket Pinnacle Restaurant while the ambience of the place was very good, at $29 each I thought a bit expensive for what was on the menue. The size of the ship (61,000 tons) limited the on board entertainment when compared to the last ship I had been on which was the Royal Caribbean Mariner of the Seas (136,000 tons), which had numerous places to go on board. Volendam entertainment was usually very good and a number of current movies shown in the main theatre. I did have one specific beef with the ship, that being after an early picture showing, there was no restaurant open for sweets or ice cream, in fact nothing open from 20.00 to 22.30 when late night snacks were availabe. There was an onboard coffee shop, coffee ok but most times no sweets or cake later at night. Room service was available in the cabin 24 hours but you had to be in the cabin to use it. I don't know of any large cruise line that does not have food available in some restaurant from 0600 to 2400. All in all, a comfortable cruise but I doubt I will go with them again.
