Anyone who has read my previous critiques knows that Celebrity is my favorite cruise line. It’s classy, it’s quiet, there are very few kids, there’s terrific service from an amazing staff, and there’s great food. It’s everything you would want in a cruise line. So when the opportunity to once again take a 2-weeker to New England and Canada came up, I and my family jumped on it.

Well. Never have I had so many things go so…strangely. If this had been my first cruise, I could have dismissed a lot of these observations. But I’m an Elite member, meaning over 10 cruises with this line, and this cruise made me see that some of the gilt is rubbing off of what I always considered a 24-karat prize.

Let me just say for starters that the cruise overall was not bad. Celebrity’s biggest strong point is its staff, and they shone as they always have. Our stateroom attendants, Jose and Neil, and our waiters, Roberto and Vanja, were simply the best to be had; our every wish and whim was granted with the utmost politeness and speed. And the ship itself was spotless; everywhere you looked, someone was scrubbing, painting, mopping, vacuuming, and so forth. No one was getting Norovirus on this ship. So I still give two big thumbs up for Celebrity’s appearance and stellar service.

(This also appears in my main cruise review.)My family was on Deck 7 starboard. My husband and I were in Stateroom 7049. One word: Beautiful. Sparkling clean, possibly the hugest deck we’ve ever had, a very comfortable bed, and glorious stateroom attendants. My parents and sister's staterooms (7053 and 7040, respectively) were also very nice and had superior service from their stateroom attendants. As an aside, though, Celebrity needs to do something about their TV service. There are people (like me) who prefer to hang out in their staterooms and just chill out on sea days. I had some great naps and enjoyed sitting on the huge veranda with a book and a cup of hot tea & cookies from the fabulous room service. But watching TV was an annoying experience. I did love the interactive TV – I liked being able to review my expense account on a daily basis so I didn’t overindulge. But while I enjoyed watching “Big Bang Theory,” “Modern Family,” and “How I Met Your Mother,” airing the same episodes over and over and over and OVER AND OVER for 2 weeks became pretty monotonous. Celebrity can use 1 or 2 channels for ship stuff, not 9 or 10. They need to get a better dish so most of the remaining channels don’t read “Poor Signal.” They need to update the bow camera channel with the correct ports of call (it said Charlottetown while we were in Quebec, both days) or spell them correctly (where on earth is New Fondland?). They need to add a lot of free movies and whole seasons of TV shows. Disney Cruise Line has one up on them on this.
