This was our first time away from home at Christmas. Our choice of Cruise was first and foremost driven by our wish to be back in England in time for New Year. There were one or two possibilities, but it was not a difficult decison to settle on Cunard and Queen Elizabeth. Although we had previously cruised on both Queen Mary and Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth was a new experience. She's a lovely ship and in our view only the most churlish could find grounds for criticism. We always travel 'bargain basement', but enjoy the same facilities and the consitently-excellent food as those who pay 'top-dollar'. Our twelve-night cruise worked out at a basic-pricing of £100 each per day, which we considered a bargain. The ship was beautifully decorated throughout for the festive period and - as expected - Christmas Day Dinner was something of a highlight. We were fortunate to be on a late-sitting lower-level table situated close to the main staircase with four great companions and, on Christmas Evening, were able to enjoy up-close the Cunard Singers, who serenaded the diners from the staircase with seasonal melodiies.

The ports of call were well-chosen and the weather throughout was mostly kind. It was especially pleasant on Christmas Eve when we were on the beach at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria (but not in the sea, although many were!). Only La Palma was a little on the dreary side as the main town. Santa Cruz, really doesn't have a lot to offer. However, we had taken a worthwhile excursion to the island's volcanic region, so it wasn't really a problem. For anyone considering an escape from the British winter over the Christmas period, we would thoroughly recommend both Queen Elizabeth (as the preferred ship) and Madeira/The Canaries (as the preferred destination).
