We chose this cruise 1 day after receiving our first brochure about VIKING OCEAN Cruises. A Romantic Mediterranean Cruise, our first with VIKING, was a Valentine's Day gift---to take place a year later, for the best pricing and discount on airfare! VIKING handled EVERY detail for flights and cruise, expeditions and transfers. LITERALLY welcomed us at the baggage carousel in Barcelona and at departure handed us off to our specific airline personnel inside the airport!!

We took an extension stay in Barcelona prior to our cruise. Our hotel was wonderfully modern in the midst of Old Town Barcelona. EXCELLENT location. We discovered two great places to eat within a block on the hotel. I fell in love with Barcelona's colorful, outstanding architecture. I did a "Skip The Line" tour of Antoni Gaudi's sculpture-in-progress, Sagrada Familia----one of the highlights of my trip! Barcelona is a MUST-SEE city. I would re-visit sometime. (We had originally planned to extend our cruise with a stay in Rome. I have no regrets that we changed to Barcelona!! It was an outstanding cultural stay living there for just two days. Rome is antiquity everywhere.)

The service of ALL Viking employees was exceptional. Hubby and I had been on a Panama Canal Cruise just 2 months before and could easily tell that this Viking staff sincerely, GENUINELY (from their heart) wanted to help make our entire cruise better...without exception!!! Fantastic training of personnel at all levels of service.

Cabin Review

Cabin DV2

NOT YOUR USUAL CABIN FEATURES! Heated floor in the bathroom, leather covered door handles, auto light sensors in closet ---so you could find your furnished robe and slippers(!!), stocked mini-bar replenished daily. QUIET!

Bathroom did NOT appear or feel small....at all! The king mattress was a bit firmer than I was used to. The bottom sheet had " a texture" to it that I found a bit grating.....but duvet was squishy comfy! 4-5 pillows. TV offered a variety of entertainment...but no GUIDE to say what was on when. Balcony was large enough for looking overboard. NOTHING on the entire ship felt inadequately designed. QUITE the opposite!

Port Reviews

Toulon

Primarily military town..........not really much to see...I would skip this port---sleep in and stay aboard ship.

Corsica (Ajaccio)

After city tour we spent time at a beach and enjoyed looking for shells and stones and watching the fishermen unload their catch. Memorable! Loved Corsica.

Florence (Livorno)

We had another sunny day.....it was the best the day could be! Interesting...but one visit here would be enough. Viking always made certain excursionists knew where they could find clean, reputable public bathrooms in each city.

Rome (Civitavecchia)

Seeing all the major sites of Rome proper in and hour and 45 minutes--from a bus---suited me. I doubt I would have been satisfied walking to all of those places of antiquity. Be aware--Rome is @ 1 1/2 hour bus ride to city limits from where ship docks---one way; so most excursions last 7 hours or more total.
