1. They need a lot more trained staff. The absence of trained staff who could speak English or knew what they were doing was very noticeable which led to poor service and lots of misunderstandings. We suspect that RCI was training new staff at our expense without having many experienced mentors. 2. The food offered at both Windjammer and the specialty restaurants was predictable, boring, mundane and unpalatable. It would not have been acceptable on an American cruise. We were on Quantum of the Seas out of NJ in Mar 16 and there was no comparison. Quantum was far superior. The prices, service and enjoyment at the specialty restaurants on Quantum were a lot better, and cheaper, than what we experienced on Ovation. 3. The shows and entertainment on Ovation were a joke. After having the 1:40 hour stage show Mama Mia, for example, on Quantum in Mar 16 to the pathetic shows offered up on Ovation were disgraceful. 4. There was no one in charge when we needed directions to get off the ship during port excursions. Everyone was wandering around trying to find where they had to be. 5. The prices being in USD were ridiculous. The AUD was not good and it added nearly 50% to our final on board bill. If you are in Australian/NZ waters, why not AUD? Princess manage to do it! 6. Our biggest gripe is that we appear to be treated as second class citizens because we are Australians. RCI would not get away with treating us like this if we were on an American/European/Caribbean cruise. 7. We are very unlikely to ever go on another RCI cruise. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the cost. It was a good deal. Maybe that was our firs mistake. The embarkation was disorganized; you didn't know what line to stand in. Next, the Windajammer Buffet was terrible. Rice and beans, hash, mashed potatoes were the first things that greeted you. Kids picking at the buffet, dropping food. As we walked down our corridor on the 7th floor, every single day there was maid carts in the way, discarded room service glasses and trays left for hours, vacuum cleaners in the aisle, even had to get out of the way of the staff vacuuming in front of the elevators. There was a bad smell in the corridors, couldn't identify it. This cruise was based out of Puerto Rico. We were told by other cruisers that residents of Puerto Rico got an insanely low cost to be on this cruise and we were definitely the minority. I believe the cuisine was catering to these folks. I will say, however, that Giovanni's Table was outstanding both nights we were there. Only good food on the cruise. Even the Dining Room food was sub par. Won't ever leave out of Puerto Rico again. Well we just returned from our 9/10/16 departure from San Juan Royal Caribbean Adventure of the Seas cruise,,,it was the most disappointing cruise I've ever taken...until this cruise, we have ALWAYS bragged on Royal Caribbean, but no longer. Let me first say the food, dining staff and room attendants were great..other than that....where to start. Day 1: Our stateroom AC was not working and the safe would not unlock after securing all our valuables. Called immediately (about 2pm) and was told they would have tech come investigate the AC, but we would have to be in the room for security to come look at the safe..we unpacked, went to dinner and upon return (about 8:30pm) there was a note on the bed saying the flushed the ac and changed the filter, but it was still not working. We then called again to complain about the AC and told them we were ready to have security come and fix the safe. At this time I requested a room change and was told "we are full and have no available rooms". Well, security didn't show until 11:30pm, so we wasted our entire first night of activities and spending quality time with the 5 couple friends we were vacationing with. The next AC tech didn't show up until 2:30AM and was still unable to fix the issue. So now we are HOT, have not slept and have not enjoyed our first night of activities...HORRIBLE DAY 1. Day 2: I'm awakened by guest services calling to tell me they still have not rectified the AC issue....really?..the puddle of sweat on my sheets could have told you that..anyway, we left for the day and upon return from a day of play (about 4:30pm) was told we would now be moving to another stateroom. I asked, "why could we not move yesterday upon my initial request" and was told by guest services, "I don't have an answer for that"...now it it formal night, so we dressed and right after dinner left all the activities and photo opportunities to spend 2 hours moving to our new stateroom that was further from the elevator, away from our friends and honestly the room was a bit cooler but nothing like our friends in other rooms. So now evening 2 has been wasted with the move...oh and their idea of "we'll take care of the move for you" was a stateroom attendant who brought 1 rolling luggage cart and stood outside and put our bags on the cart...really??? Other issues: 1. the service in the bars was terrible, not enough staff, waiting sometimes more than 40 minutes before ever seeing a server and most of the bartenders we encountered were rude....I inquired with one about a cocktail made with watermelon and was abruptly told, "we don't do watermelon".... 2. was looking forward to seeing Jungle Book at poolside...spent time gathering towels, getting cocktails and the movie listed at poolside in the compass was Jungle Book, but in reality it was another movie and the Jungle Book was in the screening room. There was a typo in the compass. Well by time we turned in the towels and got to screening room we were 30 minutes late and could only stay for about 20 minutes because....wait for it.....THERE WAS NO AC IN THE SCREENING ROOM!!!!. I must say, we've been loyal to RC for years and have always boasted on how RC was "The Best", well needless to say, we were horribly disappointed and will be looking at other alternatives for our next cruise.... Oh and the resolution Guest Services initially offered was a 50.00 room credit for our inconvenience. 50.00 for 2 nights of horror and lost fun...really? We finally agreed to their 35% discount on our next booked cruise, but honestly I feel they should have offered a monetary refund for the lost cruise...forget about future cruises....as we may NOT have a future with Royal Caribbean and neither will the scores of friends and family we generally sail with. Caution, if you are about to sail on the Adventure of the Seas, be warned, make sure your AC is running before you unpack and Good Luck...I hope your experience is better than ours. Read Less

The ship is worn and dated. Except for a couple of crew members the crew was under whelming and didn't care about the service they provided. I believe prepaid gratuities go a long ways in the drop off in service that we saw this cruise. RCCL no longer opens the dining room for lunch so you must go to the Windjammer cafe for lunch. The lunch menu was basically the same every day of the cruise and they continuously closed off large sections and ran out of food. This particularly happen just as people started returning from port. I had to eat gluten free and it took great effort to get gluten free bread or buns in the cafe. I often had to wait for more than 20 minutes to get it and then when I went to get items to make a sandwich or something the carved meats had run out. This ship has a nifty coffee bar/snack bar at the end of the promenade, but it was so over run with unruly teenagers it was virtually useless. We had the best head waiter and room steward of any cruise we have been on. The entertainment by the ships singers and dancers was far below what we have experienced on our other 13 cruises. There was virtually no Caribbean music played anywhere on the ship. There was no steel drum band at the pool. Mostly the only music at the pool was by a DJ and it was Rap or Disco and deafening loud. When the DJ wasn't at the pool or in late night clubs he was set up in the promenade and played the same type of music, but louder. You couldn't hear the person next to you talking even when 100 yards away. Musically the only saving grace on the ship was Bruno Aguilar in the piano bar and he was excellent. There were 2 comedians on the cruise and both were pretty vulgar even at the family entertainment time. I can't imagine what the late night adult show was like. Of course attendance at these events is optional and we chose not to attend. Musically the only saving grace on the ship was Bruno Aguilar in the piano bar and he was excellent. This cruise offered almost no enrichment activities such as classes. They offered an adult only napkin folding demonstration/class but it was so over run with 5-8 year old children that we could not participate. It was done on top of the piano in the piano bar. The crew should have advised the parents that this was an adult only class. From what the crew told us, there were about 400 more kids on this ship than usual and they were extremely loud, rude, and out of control. The parents wouldn't control them and the crew was afraid to say anything to them for fear of offending a parent. It was a safety issue as they would run and bump into people, Several times I was almost knocked down. I love kids, I have my own, but something needs to be done or someone is going to get hurt. We learned our lesson, no more late July or early August cruises out of San Juan. I am not sure we will cruise with RCCL again. We paid a lot of money for horrible cruise. We had been on RCCL ships about 6 times, Celebrity 6 times, Princess 1 time, and Carnival once and this wasa the worst experience we have ever had. We'll have to go back to Celebrity which is our favorite even though they are owned by RCCL. Read Less

Bad judgement. This is an aging battle wagon, worn out, noisy and dirty. The skulking mood of the crew matches the dark tone of this worn out junk. If you love horrible cafeteria food served amongst hordes of overweight Americans you will love RCL and this ship. The sewage system which apparently is 20' from my room has been worked on for the entire cruise by an apparently puzzled staff. Late night parties that keep your grandchildren awake.....oh you will just love white night. The entire floor above us sounded like it was going to collapse. I called the operating to complain and they sent a man to our room. He basically said, "too bad, it will end at 11:30. The food in the starlight lounge was mediocre and the staff friendly enough. However when dining I prefer a crowd that dresses a little better than their best t-shirt and flip flops. Overall.....NO stars.....disgusting Read Less

The ports were the reason we chose this cruise. But that is the only thing that was worth the trip. Customer service is NON EXISTENT. Never have I been more disappointed in the service at every single level of this ship. It started with no help with your luggage when checking in. Lazy lazy people all around with their hands in the their pockets. Now that the majority of people get the drink packages, they no longer have staff to serve you drinks. Congratulations, you pay 100% up front with tip and now you get SELF SERVICE. And you will wait a long time at the bar for the 1 bartender to make your drink. They are making a killing and the customer is getting screwed. Every single day the buffet for breakfast and lunch was EXACTLY the same. Exactly the same. And it was not good. Hamburger, hot dog, sad pizza and tacos. The deserts were something you could expect to see on a hospital tray. We went to one show, the adult comedian. He was crude and told jokes we all already knew. The beds were hard as rocks and I stayed in a Grand Suite. So I expected to have a better experience. I can tell you what I would do if you are thinking of going on this cruise. Fly to the port you most want to see. Skip the bad food, the miserable boat drill, the lazy staff, and the 28 inch single bed for a luxurious bed that you can get in a good hotel on the beach. Aruba and Curaçao have an EDUCATED and smart tourist positive group of taxi and excursion directors. I will go back to Aruba. No more cruises for me. Read Less

Booking agent Dorothy on RC site lied at time of booking seven months ago. Thirteen in our group. We're told would get all adjoining rooms on balcony with all partitions open for us. WRONG. Not allowed. Maid told us to go get a Phillips screwdriver and take them off ourselves. We didn't. We were told anytime dining..WRONG. Forced to 8:30 eating with two children. Toilet broken..fixed after seven hours .internet SLOW for $60.00 special last three days...only worked two days and s-l-o-w. Wheel chair accessible terrible for one member. Debarkinga joke. Wheel chair member sent to dark bar on forth floor. Oops, RC meant Imperial Room on five. Booked tour of San Juan for 7:30 debarking day. Wheel chair people not on duty until 8:00 am. Two people on duty at Service Desk to handle problems that morning. Last count, twenty five people in line with problems. Won't go into salad dumped on back of member in dining area. Slot machines all broke at 5:30 pm on day at sea...many cruisers had to get dressed up for fancy night. Drinks 12.00, Soda 4.00, nothing free...nickel and dimed to death. Was offered a bottle of wine for compensation. Told them what to do with it. Web site terrible and everyone lies just to get you on the ship..we thirteen we never go RC again. This was our eight cruise for all of us so we weren't rookies. Food small portions and anything chicken very dry. Read Less

We cruised on the Adventure of the seas in Feb 2016 and I was disappointed in many ways. First the ship was run down. The room was a sunset veranda but there was no view. We were told the view was partially obstructed. In reality it was totally obstructed. We booked a shore excursion that through the cruise line and they claimed we would see the oldest working rum distillery in the Caribbean. The distillery was not working and was simply a junk yard. We complained about the excursion and asked for a refund but they were not receptive to a refund. After a couple days they did agree to a 50% rebate. They did not review the excursion prior to selling it. They should not have charged us. Royal changed the gratuity policy since our last cruise with royal in 2012 and add them to your stateroom bill. No one told us about this even when we asked about paying the gratuities. So we paid gratuities and after leaving the ship found our stateroom account was also charged. I called Royal and they refused to make any refund on the doubled gratuities. Although I have felt Royal had the nicest ships, good service and good food in the past I don't believe I will sail with them again. We have sailed 5 times with Royal 2 time with their sister line Celebrity and 2 times with Princess. Princes told us the gratuities would be added to our account Royal never did. This was the worst cruise experience I have had. Read Less

It has been 9 years since we used RCCL and the changes have been significant. No more: ice in room (unless you ask), no more towel animals (only 3x per cruise) only one steward per room (no assistant), lower quality and choices of food, charges for nearly everything, rooms smelly and unclean and dinner dress code non-existent. Adventure of the Seas is for young drinkers and was poorly designed. Dining room in the middle of the ship. Elevators only forward and center making it a hike if your stateroom was towards the aft. RCCL compares to Carnival and certainly NOT to Holland America. We received NO help on getting boarding passes for return home and we would HAVE to purchase a minimum of one days internet ($9.95) to do that The future cruise director refused to help me and I am 70% blind. Only saving point was the Irish Pub on board but they only had one draft beer because they couldn't get their other beer taps fixed. The dinner servers were great as were the bartenders at the "Duck & Dog". Otherwise it was poor example of what RCCL used to be. We will not use again. They overdid their cost cutting. WE would rather pay a bit more and get more of what a cruise line should be. Shore excursions are way overpriced and there was a very limited choice. Much better deals at the end of the docking pier. Over the years we have completed over 60 cruises on different cruise lines. We recently completed our third cruise on Royal Caribbean. We sailed on the Adventure of the Seas out of San Juan Puerto Rico. This was the worst cruise we have ever taken and positively the last on Royal Caribbean. We hadn't sailed on Royal for a few years and decided to given them another try after some disappointing cruises thinking they may have improved. The ship is old and it looks old. It reminds me of visiting a budget hotel that time forgot. The food at every meal was served cold, dried out and tasteless. The menu was uncreative. The entrees were the size of appetizers. [Example: Four small dumplings; pear and arugula salad or a strip of beef on top of cold salad in a soup bowl were entree.) Desserts had no taste. Giovanni’s, the only specialty restaurant on this ship, with a charge $25pp was no better than the MDR. The center of the ship is called the Royal Promenade. In the evening this area becomes clogged with entertainment, store tables, café’s, bars and people. It is almost impossible (and hazardous) to use the promenade to get to the other end of the ship. I do have say the crew is very friendly and will go out of their way for guests. But I have never had so many crew members asking to write reference cards for them. Read Less
