Our scenic adventure started with a driver waiting for us at Budapest airport who dropped us at Marriott. Great hotel good location. Two pre cruise days in Budapest. So much much to see and all of it walkable. Scenic picked up our luggage first then later transferred us to Scenic Ruby. Very efficient and quick process. We had a royal balcony suite on the ruby. Spacious, comfortable bed, large bathroom, plenty of storage for clothing, and separate lounges area w/small couch and two chairs. We were very happy with the size of the suite for our 15 day journey. Daily laundry service was an unexpected bonus. Put out your bag of clothes in the morning, and they are returned clean, folded and pressed in the afternoon. Though we did not use the butler service much, they were quick to respond when we called. Due to low water levels we had to change ships once after Melk. The staff on both Ruby and Jade made it so seamless, it was no issues what so ever. The daily choice of activites were excellent. We did bike rides, city tours, and more. Scenic really caters to all activity levels. Our tour guides in Salzburg and in Cologne were boring, so we set out on our own to explore. Wished we had more time to explore some of the Salzburg. The staff on both Ruby and Jade were quite honestly outstanding. From housekeeping who kept our suite spotless, to the wait staff in the dining room, all top notch. Food in the dining room was really quite good. My husband especially enjoyed the fresh cookie selection available all day every day next to that great coffee machine in the lounge. Alex our crises director was entertaining and informative, and we looked forward to the port talks each night, as well as his insightful presentations on the history and culture of the areas we cruised through. Each day he steered us to the right buses, or activities, and was always on hand to answer any questions we had for him. I really enjoyed the fact that I didn’t have to plan anything...we just had to choose what our activity was for the following day. We very much enjoyed the wonderful fellow cruisers on the boat. We are in our late 50’s early 60’s, so we were part of the younger crowd. But what a great mix of people. We also had on board two folks from National Geographic. Susan was the photographer who was there to share technique’s and help hone skills. Mark was there to share with us the history, culture and politics of the regions we were sailing through. Both were such a great addition to the cruise. We ended the cruise in Amsterdam, and spent two days exploring that lovely city. I would suggest that Scenic select another hotel option other than the Double tree. While it was a great location, it was was run down and our room was dirty. I would pay more for a nicer hotel. This was our first river cruise and our first Scenic adventure. Our first Nat Geo adventure. It is not often that often that reality exceeds expectations, but Scenic hit it out of the ball park on this trip. When Scenic says it’s all inclusive, they not kidding. From food to cocktails to all your excursions, it’s all included. If you are looking for outstanding service, spacious and lovely accommodations, varied excursions for all activity levels (we were the high activity level), a great mix of passengers, and a trip you won’t soon forget - Scenic is the cruise line for you. We chose this cruise du to the fact that it was all inclusive and the write-ups. Due to river levels we did not get to sail on the ship we paid for. This we found out the day before we boarded the ship (Scenic Amber) hence we were on an older vessel lacking amenities we paid for. At the time of booking this cruise (may 2017) we book adjacent rooms with close friends as both couples were celebrating 40th anniversary, and this trip was to commemorate this event. Upon boarding the ship found us separated substantially on the same deck. When we approached the cruise director he informed that the ships were different configuration and there was nothing he could do. We would have to take it up with Scenic at a later date. Needless to say the cruise started off totally with a crash. The change to the second ship ended up consuming almost 2 days with an evening packing, 6 hours on a bus for a 2 hour tour and an evening for unpacking into tighter quarters on "Scenic Pearl". Dining on board was average at best but should be rated at 2.5, other than the Table La Riv. Compared to other cruises I have been where dining would be 4 to 5. Read Less

We chose this cruise after very careful scrutiny of itineraries, cabins and amenities. This was to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, and had to be very special. We booked 51 weeks in advance to ensure we got what we wanted and what we paid for. We arrived in Budapest on August 20/18, got our bags, went through customs and finally found our private transfer to the ship. We were VERY disappointed to find that we were not going to the ship but to the Corinthia hotel. Australian and British passengers were advised in advance of the change caused by low water in the river. Canadians were not advised. Ships could not get past Vienna going up the river, or Regensburg coming down. The Jade was one of those stuck above Regensburg. J.J. the Cruise Director, met with the group of us who had been assigned to stay at the Corinthia. He promised that we would meet up with the Scenic Pearl in Vienna, and that our cabin would be equivalent to what we had booked on the Scenic Jade. He also told us that we would be transferred to the Jade at Regensburg, at some point, which meant we had to pack up and move partway through the cruise. At dinner that evening, at the Corinthia, I advised J.J. that I had a dairy allergy (the appropriate form had been filled out and submitted to Scenic in October 2017). He arranged for the maitre d' to help me with what I could eat on the buffet. However, when we were taken to a restaurant the next day for lunch, enroute to Vienna, he had not advised them and there was nothing I could eat safely. He became angry when I told him that and said it was not his job to worry about everyone's diet. He claimed he managed 7 ships and hundreds of guests and staff, and had no time to worry about everyone's diet. He blamed Scenic, the restaurant and me. His job was to take care of us on behalf of Scenic. My dietary restrictions were an issue for the entirety of the cruise. I was given the menus for the day each morning, once we reached the Jade. The dishes containing dairy were highlighted, but no alternates offered. The food on both ships was terrible. Very little choice, poorly executed and very little of it. We often had room service for dinner because it was faster, and tasted better than the dining room. On approximately the day 3 on the Jade, they stopped offering coffee/tea at lunch and dinner. For the most part, the crew with the exception of J.J., were wonderful. Our butlers: Kris & Gus (Pearl) and Harry (Jade) were very attentive. Harry especially would ensure my meals were dairy free and I was being taken care of, when he was in the dining room. Read Less

We chose Scenic because of its reputation and that it was Australian. The guests were a mixture of Aussies (100), Canadians (40) Brits (10) ands two US couples. So, it was mostly a nice "Commonwealth" group. Initially we had to overnight in Budapest at a hotel since no cruise ships were reaching that port. The next day, we were transferred to Vienna by bus where we boarded the Pearl. Some people were not happy, but Scenic handled the situation well. In Passau, we were finally transferred to the Jade, which again went well considering the single day turnover of guests aboard both ships. Our Cruise Director "JJ" was excellent, entertaining, and very knowledgeable. He stayed with us on the full journey. We thoroughly enjoyed this adventure, the onshore excursions which were numerous, the onboard entertainment, gourmet meals at dinner and the great staff on both ships. What a wonderful experience. We would highly recommend Scenic to anyone for a European river boat cruise. Read Less

while I have no complaints regarding the staff and crew of the Jade,I do have serious complaints about the way we were treated by Scenic. There was no communication about the fact that the Jade did not make it to Budapest ,we had to phone despite Scenic having all our email addresses. On our first day we were bused to The Courtyard Marriott in Budapest,a third rate hotel with basically no facilities,a three star room, and a dreadful buffet meal with only one small glass of local beer allowed.Other passengers were accommodated in 5 star hotels which one would expect given the prices we paid. The next day included the 'guide tour of Budapest 'excursion. This was basically a bus tour for four hours , with the only highlight being a brilliant piano and organ recital. No water was offered despite it being 35 degrees C.We were then subjected to a 5 hour bus transfer to Vienna to join the Pearl, NOT the Jade that had been booked. Our room was the same number as the room booked on the Jade but was quite a lot smaller, and had a tiny shower, Certainly not what you could call luxurious. The balcony option may be a waste of money as many days we woke up to another ship moored alongside. After several days on the Danube we were bused again to join the Jade in Regensburg. We eventually got our luxury balcony suite that we had paid for. The rest of the cruise was good .It is less a luxury cruise, more like a luxury bus tour as every day involved trips on coaches, sometimes as long as four hours round trip.[The Sound of Music excursion] These ships are short on space, and long on numbers of passengers. There was never enough room in the lounge to sit unless someone went an hour ahead to reserve seats. You should be aware that it appears that Scenic market these tours extensively in Australia,so don't be surprised if you are cheek and jowl with over 120 large and loud Aussies!! Read Less

36 hours before we were due to fly to Amsterdam we received an email via Scenic to our agent informing us that we were going on the Scenic Jade when we embarked at Amsterdam and not the Ruby. We were not up set as the Jade was a few years newer. We found the transfers to the ship good, on arriving our luggage was left at the quay and later arrived at our room. We found our tour guide Andrea excellent, if all destinations staff were so well organised as she was all of our previous Ocean cruises would have been far much better. The tours were very good, the only tour which was a disappointment was the coach trip to Cologne, nothing wrong with the coach or the city. Just the english tour guide who had very little interest in taking the group round the city centre area. In fact we went to the Cathedral and stood out side for some 30 minutes then he disappeared for good, we walked around in free time. The other tours which were in the cruise itinerary were excellent, some fairly early starts to get there but worth the the early start. The castle tour and banquet to Marksburg was okay, the tour actually around the castle was good, done by volunteers, but the medieval feast was a bit poor and did not live up to to our expectations from a up market cruise. Otherwise all other tours were very good. Dining was set time, 19.00 which meant that that everyone collected at the same point, the lounge for the pre next day information talk and then down into the restaurant. Service overall was fairly slow, some nights taking 2.5 hours to finally get your desserts. It improved slightly as time went by but not that impressed. Some reviews in the past have commented on the standard of the food served and it should not be compared to Ocean cruising food, well we have cruised all over the world and I can only say that the food was over hyped, very small servings, in fact my wife also ordered soup as one of the dishes every night because the all other servings were very small quantities. Harry our butler was very good and looked after us very well at all times, it was disappointment to have to see him go as when we had to leave the Jade at Linz and join the Jasper at Melk. This was because a part of the Danube was so low due to the long dry summer that Europe had been experiencing. Lucky for us we managed to navigate the rest of thee cruise on the Jasper to Budapest. The rest of the cruise review is under Scenic Jasper. Read Less

We were meeting friends who were coming to meet us on board from the UK. This was their first river cruise and one couple has already said their last. Although the itinerary was great the level of service, staff in both dining and lounge was poor to none on Scenic Jade and because we had to change ships due to water levels Scenic Jasper was ok but not great either. Not sure if staff was lacking on the Jade but the dining room manager was never there we were lucky to find a server for a cup of coffee in the morning water or beverages in the evening to start a meal. The same applied for the service in the lounge unless you went up to the bar area to request a drink the servers were slow to none. The Jasper was better but again service levels were not there Appetizers and champagne were suppose to be served but both sides were served and not the middle. Very disorganized both staff and cruise director giving false information in regards to the changing of ships. We were to get same cabin numbers on Jasper that we had on Jade and the door would be open after our bus ride of over 6.5 hours and that was false, we were given a smaller cabin that was not in the same category that we booked when we came on board. Our original ship was to be the Scenic Ruby and we were told while in transit day prior our ship was changed to the Jade. Our sailing was actually August 13, 2018. This was our second river cruise with Scenic and probably our last due to all the sickness on board both ships lack of quality of service and disorganization and bussed way too much. Very disappointing. Read Less

We picked this cruise line because it was an all inclusive luxury cruise on the list of best cruises according to Cruise Critic with a so called butler included that was going to make our trip a breeze. Not true! But for me their costumer service is the worse part of Scenic. My problem with costumer service started right at the time of booking. The gentleman with whom I spoke for more than an 1hour provided me with all kind of wrong information and ended up booking me on the wrong day. I do admit to not have reviewed closely the confirmation paper he sent me, but when I called back to ask for the correction, I was told that I needed cancel and start a new booking loosing all the advantages of early booking. Of course I was not doing that, so I was passed along to the manager who agreed to investigate and call me back. Which she did, confessing that they went back and listened to the entire hour of my conversation and admitted that never once the date I had been booked was ever mentioned and that indeed the gentleman had provided all kinds of wrong information. This was just the first episode with them. Scenic Air was another nightmare, I had been told that they would contact me in Nov. and by January I had to call them. Talked to a lady, gave her all the information ( all 6 passengers were coming and going in different days, from different cities) and was told that she would get back to me with my reservations. Many calls later, speaking to many different people, explaining the same thing over and over, getting mad, I was finally able to get a person to do the booking of our flights. It is unacceptable that they do not provide you one contact person and have that person deal with all aspects of your trip from beginning to end. Their website is a real nightmare and to call them is even worse. As if that was not bad enough I had to deal with their lack of service and response on my return. After a cruise in which we spent 5 days out of the boat due to low water levels, we were sent a generic letter from Scenic saying sorry if you had any inconvenience and giving us a small rebate for 3 days. I immediately contacted them telling them that we had been promised 5 days, and to give them my view on the fact that we had paid for the 2 most expensive cabins on board and had been given the worse hotel rooms on land in the worse hotels possible. I was expecting some personal note, maybe a call apologizing and acknowledging their oversight and got instead a note from Jeffrey Scott, Sales Consultant, saying, and I quote " I will pass along your comments regarding the compensation as well as your comments on the cruise itself on to our departmental manager, who is away on holiday at the moment but will return next week." Of course, Mr. Mueller, the Departmental Manager, never called me on his own volition. I had to call them a week later, pass thru their thousand of options, get a selling agent, and ask to speak with either Mr. Scott or Alan Mueller. At last I was able to talk to Mr. Mueller who told me that he would investigate the matter and get back to me. Still waiting on that call but I guess that he did investigate because I just got the same generic letter corrected to 5 days of compensation rather than 3. Never once did these Managers said their were sorry about the fact that we paid much more than the regular cabins for the Royal and Panorama cabins and got the worse possible rooms in all the hotels we stayed. Sometimes a few words, a little kindness go a long way and make the difference between a good experience and a very bad one. Scenic NEEDS to work on their Costumer Service. From the moment that one uses the website to the moment we get back - their service is horrendous. And they specially need someone, in case of a problem, that knows how to talk with/to appease their not so happy costumers. Having said all this I want to make it clear that the staff on board was very nice, polite, professional and worked very hard. It appears that everyone has many jobs and they are always running around trying their best with a smile on their faces. The food is pretty average, not the upscale dinning experience promised in their brochure and the 3 restaurants advertised are a joke. They use the same place and call it different names because they offer different food at a specific table. Oh well, it is a small boat after all. The excursions were somehow affected by the need to bus us from the hotels rather than the cruise which might have made them be shorten in order to accommodate the time spent on the bus. Maybe in normal circumstances they would have been a little more relaxed and more enjoyable. Despite the inconveniences the family had a good time while onboard... not so good time on the hotels we were placed while on land. Some of them were unacceptable. If you are ever offered the Novotel City hotel in Budapest, make sure to refuse. Read Less

Wanted to try River cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. Was supposed to be on Scenic Ruby day prior to sailing while in transit was told it was changed to scenic Jade. Service in dining room and lounge was absolutely terrible not sure if they were understaffed or this was the norm however we were a table of 6 and it was very difficult to get a cup of coffee water tea or anything at all dinners and if you did get lucky one person got it as the waiter would walk away without asking anyone else at the table. If in the lounge you very rarely got served a drink unless you went up to the bar and gave your drink order. We were told on day 2 that we needed to change ships because of the water level so in the morning pack your things. Packed up than were told it was okay we got a wave and could stay on this ship so after unpacking set sail. We were bussed so much and for hours than again told to pack up changing ships to Jasper and after all day on a bus arrived at the Jasper. We were told by the cruise director we would keep same cabin and we would just go into our room as the door we be open. This was Not the case we were given a smaller cabin and nothing we could do about it, this was not the category we paid for. The service on Jasper was better but still not up to standards. This cruise was not cheap and the quality of service plus the disorganization of the staff and cruise director left us saying never again. I understand low water levels happen and itineraries can change but quality of service and staff should not. Read Less

Quality of the food was downright poor. We did not like much of the buffet food and were not told that we could order from a menu. We finally found this out on the next to last day of the cruise. One day for lunch there was no protein at all. Scenic dining service was terrible. Restaurant staff had no clue how to provide service. Most dinners took 2 hours. After dinner it took 20 minutes for the server just to get a cup of coffee. I finally went and got one myself. Told this to the director and he politely smiled, but this didn't change anything. On the sun deck service, was nonexistent. I had to go downstairs to the bar to get my own drink. Even in the loune right next to the bar it took way too long for a server to get a drink. The crew was simply way understaffed. Communication was extremely poor - no one could provide times for events until the night before. We purchased a cruise on the Scenic Amber. Scenic had to change boats because of low water on the river. But we were never told that Scenic changed boats on us until we arrived. They put us on the Jade then a 6 hour bus ride to the Jasper several days into the cruise. Read Less
