Sail Date: Feb 2014

This past Friday, February 7th, I had the opportunity to attend the official christening ceremonies and then sail on an all-too-short overnight voyage from Miami on the spectacular Norwegian Getaway. Not counting some time for sleeping (yes, we actually did get some sleep), we spent about 12 hours on this amazing new ship and ran ourselves ragged checking out virtually every public area, entertainment venue, traditional and specialty restaurants along with dozens of staterooms and suites.

Sister-ship to the New York based Breakaway, the Getaway was designed with a true Miami feel from the Mojito Bar and Churrascaria to the spectacular hull artwork which was designed by David “Lebo” LeBatard, a Cuban-American artist who is based in South Florida. To add even more of a genuine south Florida atmosphere to the occasion the beautiful Miami Dolphins cheerleaders did the honors as the official godmothers, the onboard ceremonies were hosted by actress, dancer and television personality Brooke Burke Charvet, we were treated to an exciting live musical performance by Grammy award-winning rapper Pitbull, and shortly after we sailed from Miami at 9 P.M. we viewed a great fireworks show.

Obviously, you need much more time on the Getaway to see and experience everything that Norwegian has included on this exciting and extremely attractive ship. In total, however, the ship has something to offer for the young and young-at-heart, and there are an unbelievable number of options and things to do during your days onboard. The ship features 27 dining options, 22 bars and lounges, 5 amazing waterslides, and a 3-level sports complex that includes a ropes course, rock climbing wall, miniature golf and the opportunity to be harnessed and, if you dare, walk on a narrow plank that extends about eight feet from the side of the ship and leaves you standing over 160 feet above the ocean. The Getaway also features a huge spa and fitness center, the exciting new Illusionarium supper club, a sprawling casino, a terrific kid’s pool, great facilities and programs for children, and lots of other live music and entertainment venues.
