Just finished a nuremberg to Budapest cruise on the Viking Idun. It was a great cruise. My first river cruise, after many ocean cruises. Barry the Cruise director and Jens, the hotel manager were excellent. Barry was outside in the cold to greet us when we arrived. How wonderful is that? Compared to standing in line after line for an ocean cruise, this was amazing. Our cabin was by far the smallest cabin I have ever been in. However, part of the reason was the dresser and closet which gave an unusual amt of storage. The bath was tiny but functional. The food was okay but no real WoW meals. We had great service. Others have mentioned trouble getting wine but there no trouble like that on this ship. I thought the portion sizes were small. I mentioned this to the chef who said one can always order another plate. I did not see that happen at all. Breakfast and lunch were nice buffets with the option of ordering something addition.
One of the features I loved was the leisurely walking tours. I have asthma and bad knees, to be able to walk slower and not feel I am holding people up was outstanding! I hope Viking continues this practice. My travel partner was in every fast or expanded walking tour so there was something for each of us. Another great feature was the quiet box. Everyone had their own box and it made the tour comfortable and everyone could hear the guides.
Our co-cruisers were a nice mix of ages, somewhat younger than an ocean cruise. Nice to get to know people with the smaller group of passengers. One group was over served at least twice during the cruise, which fine but with a smaller lounge, it was hard to avoid their noise.
