My wife and I had been on many cruises, but never on a River Cruise and had never been to Europe. We're limited to vacation times during the year due to her teaching schedule and Xmas week has been customarily our time to to go to Florida, the western part of the U.S., and to the Caribbean and Mexico..
So to go to Europe during the winter, was not what I was expecting when my wife booked our cruise a year and a half in advance. The price looked great 2 for 1, as well as the airfare, which during Xmas and New Years usually seems to skyrocket.
After returning last weekend, I must say that what you see and read in Viking's Brochures is exactly what we received and more. On a rating of 1-10, we would rate it a 15 !!! The ship, the staff and crew, the menu's, the tour guides and excursions were phenominal. We traveled to Hungary, Austria and Germany, with stops in Budapest, Vienna, Melk, Passau, Regensburg and Nuremberg.
The cathedrals, the towns, the shops and atmosphere during the trip was exceptional. We lucked out weather wise, since the 1st 6 days were the warmest on record with only the last 2 days with colder temps with snow. On Xmas morning we were fortunate that the ship's Captain was able to dock ahead of schedule in Passau, and passengers who wished were invited to attend an early morning Mass in St. Stephan's Cathedral which has been ranked as having the largest cathedral pipe organ in the world. The Music, the Choir as well as the service in German and Latin with the exquisite beauty of ceiling and walls with art fresco's was incomparable.
We toured the Abbey at Melk which had unbelievable grandeur overlooking the Danube River high up on a hill, as well as the Schonbruun Palace in Vienna, and the Hall of Justice in Nuremberg Germany and the Courtroom where the Nuremberg Trials of World War II her held. Budpaest was also beautiful, docked near the Chain Bridge.
The ship's staff and program director warranted a 5 star rating. I have a dairy food allergy, and the Executive Chef and Maitre'D made it a point to make sure my requirements were accommodated. The food and dining room service was exceptional and our stateroom although not large, was well maintained and met our needs. We took tons of photopgraphs and short videos which we have as a remembrance, and would be glad to share them with anyone.
All in all traveling on the Viking Idun was an exceptional experience and we look forward to more sailings on their ships.
Modern, clean and many 110v outlets to accommodate our needs. The bathroom, although compact, had a two-person size shower. Plenty of closet and drawer space, and the French Balcony (Ceiling to Floor Sliding Glass Door without a physical Balcony) provided ample scenic views from our stateroom.
