We sailed on Viking's Rhine Getaway during the Christmas Market season. It was wonderful. Viking builds in enough to do that we didn't feel that we were getting additional charges every time we stepped off the boat.
The food was wonderful, with perfect portions, and our staff was quick to learn what we liked and was quick to attend to our likes. The evening information sessions were always entertaining, due in no small part to our program director, Rene, who is smart, funny, and well-informed. We enjoyed the excursions at each stop, and every tour guide was well-chosen, well-versed in his or her locale, and fun to listen to.
The Kara quickly became our home away from home. It is clean, tastefully decorated, and easy to find your way around. The stairs inside are not too steep, and the stairs to the observation deck gave us sure footing, even at night and in the rain.
Loved it. I am totally spoiled for any other kind of accommodation. We enjoyed our fresh fruit each day. Our beds were comfortable, though they are fitted European-style. I suggest that if you prefer a top sheet, that you ask for one on the first day. The sofa and easy chair were plenty comfy, and our bathroom was wonderful. The heated floors were a real treat!
Strasbourg is Stunning at Christmastime!
Heidelberg Castle is well worth the effort.
Koblenz at night is a maze of wonderful streets, but at Christmastime it is magic.
Cologne is a major surprise. It is a vibrant, exciting city, and the Christmas markets were the best on the trip.
