We're a couple of sixty somethings embarking on our first cruise together. My partner loves cruising in the eastern Med but the prospect of cruising on large ships with gazillions of passengers is my idea of hell, so this was a compromise. And what a fantastic time we had. I loved every minute of the Avalon Felicity experience. Sadly KLM forgot to send our luggage with us from Amsterdam to Zurich so we embarked with just our hand baggage. Our first night on board saw us entering the restaurant in jeans and trainers for dinner. The staff were fantastic and equipped us with toothpaste and brushes and Mariana from reception gave me a new packet of cleansers from her own supply. Christine, our cruise director, went the whole hog to get our luggage flown to Strasbourg and delivered to the ship just in in time for the captain's dinner on the second night. From then on the whole trip was a dream.

Our cabin was spotlessly clean with plenty of storage space and well supplied with toiletries. My partner is 6ft 5in and he found the bathroom plenty big enough with lots of space in the shower. There are just three accommodation decks and we were in the middle deck. The lower deck is very close to the water and has small windows that do not open. For this cruise I would say it was well worth paying the extra for 2nd or 3rd deck as they have floor to ceiling sliding doors with a chrome barrier at waist height. On a couple of occasions we were able to sit up in bed with the doors open watching the world go by as we cruised along the Rhine to our next destination. Spectacular!

Entertainment on board was limited but we were so exhausted after all the great shore trips that we just had a night cap in the bar after dinner then crashed out in our cabin for the night. The pianist was on every night. We met some really nice people and mixed with lots of different people at mealtimes. The food was mostly excellent with lots of variety at the buffet meals. Dinner was a served at table and there was at least four courses, beautifully presented. Wine, beer or soft drinks were included. The service was brilliant. I'm still not sure how they managed to do it with so few staff and and a kitchen not much bigger than our living room! And all the staff were always cheerful and friendly. The captain even serenaded us with two numbers on the Crew Entertainment evevning!
