Been to and lived in Europe. but not this particular area of the Rhine. Like history and cathedrals, and this area has a number of them. River cruising is a convenient and practical way to see a number of cities and attractions in a minimal number of days. We embarked in Basel, Switzerland. The Viking Kara is a very new ship with comfortable cabins, a very friendly and caring crew, and a very good dining experience. The food and beverage service is well prepared, well presented and the wait staff really nice. The ship is immaculately clean and our concierge was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The daily excursions were well planned out and interesting. Guides were very good and easy to understand at all times. Much of the entertainment on board was provided by local artisans and musician entertainers and were indicative of the local area and very talented. We very much enjoyed this cruise and recommend it.
This was our second cruise on Viking, the first cabin having a balcony. We chose a french balcony this time due to the weather being quite chilly and a balcony being uncomfortable and a waste. The cabins on these river boats are fairly small, but compared to ocean cruise ship cabins pretty typical. We don't spend much time in them any ways.
Unfortunately the weather was rainy and cold. We tried to hike up a small mountain to see a old monastery but ran out of time.
Walked around a few hours. Interesting place and lots of nesting storks to see.
