Always intrigued by the Viking River Cruise commercials on Downton Abbey. When we received a brochure for the City of Lights, who could resist a Viking River Cruise sandwiched between Prague and Paris? We decided to do it up right and reserved the Explorer Suite. We were always treated to first class service and had many amenities that went with the suite. We thought it was definitely worth the additional cost, especially since it included Business Class airfare from the States. We aren't "foodies" so weren't really expecting to be wowed by the on board meals and we weren't...always good but nothing extraordinary. Best food we had was on shore. The shore excursions were first class and our guides were knowledgeable and cordial. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience, would certainly recommend it to others but there are plenty of items on our "bucket list" that we want to do before booking another river cruise. Sort of "been there, done that".
The suite was everything it was advertised to be, spacious and first class. We received special attention by being in one of the two Explorer Suites including free laundry. The only thing you won't learn by reading the Viking literature on the suite is that it sits over the engines. When the captain gave it the gas ( which was infrequent) you had no doubt where the engines were. The 270 degree veranda was perfect for drinking a German beer and watching the castles drift by. We always felt like we had abundant space in the suite and never experienced cabin fever. Would certainly recommend treating yourself to the Explorer Suite.
