  • Sail Date: Aug 2016
  • Destination: the Baltic Sea
  • Cabin Type: Penthouse Suite

This was only our third cruise and our first with Regent. We picked it because it offered 3 days in St. Petersburg and the Business Class Airfare add-on was VERY reasonable.

Although there were a few signs of The Voyager aging ( worn carpeting and frayed curtains) overall we were quite pleased with the ship and look forward to seeing it after the Refurbishing later this year.

For some reason, we received a lot of SBC from our travel agent even though we had never used them or Regent before. In addition, all the arrangements she made were perfect, except that she never explained in advance the ships policy of only getting reservations in the Special restaurants twice on the cruise, and she oversold how Dressy the dining rooms were.. We were also surprised that, 3 days prior to sailing, we were offered an upsell from a Veranda suite to an AFT Penthouse-which we jumped on.

The food throughout the ship was quite good, with the exception of SetteeMarie which was not even average. We thought Prime 7 was excellent and so was Compass Rose. We did notice that in the mornings, although Compass Rose was fairly empty for breakfast, the service was horrible. We ate the rest of our breakfasts in LaVeranda.

We did NOT have the service problem in the evening at Compass Rose, so I am not sure why that was. WE also noticed that in several bars, although they were pouring premium brands, they were chintzy with the quantity until we learned to ask for doubles.

Our Aft Penthouse came with a Butler who was perfect, he filled every request quickly with a smile and made some excellent suggestions. The cabin was a little noisy (878) from the props while the ship was moving quickly but we soon got used to it. The cabin was well furnished, large, and everything we could ask for with one of the largest balconies on board.

I did not care for the Regent "Free Excursion" policy since so many were offered at the same time you could usually only go on 1 or at most 2 each day. That being said, most of the free excursions were pretty good with only one or two having guides that were hard to understand. I thought Helsinki was boring and Riga was worse. Copenhagen, Amsterdam and Talinn were all incredible.

Andy & Tammy Heath (Cruise Directors) were perfect in their roles and made sure everyone enjoyed themselves, if they wanted to.

We ended up meeting several couples, either from excursions or from sharing a table in a restaurant that we truly enjoyed and hope to continue long-term friendships with.

We will definitely look to Regent for another cruise, possibly next year.

Cabin Review

Penthouse Suite
Cabin C 878

Clean, spacious with walk in closet. The bathroom and bath products were superb. Only complaint was there was almost no place to plug the hairdryer in, due to the plug size- most people seemed to bring an extension cord to make it work.

Anne Frank House

A must see for any visitor to Amsterdam

This was a fun tour but half way through, we decided to go off on our own and explore the city

Not worth it. The city was much more modern than we expected, the weather was not great and the guide was hard to understand

We went off on our own for this city and were very pleased we did. The old City of Tallinn is very walkable and we had plenty of time to see what we wanted.

Amber Room

Part of a private tour we booked to include Peterhof and Catherines Palace.

Interesting but there were better places to see.

Catherine Palace

Private tour with ship line. Worth not having to spend hours waiting on others, also, a VERY knowledgeable guide.

Peterhof Palace

Again a private tour, booked with the ship. They pointed out that the 2 big palaces were so similar, we could skip the inside of one, if we saw the other. That being said, we skipped the inside of Peterhof and concentrated on the lower gardens and many of the outbuildings, including the little known Bath houses. WELL WORTH IT

Russian Ballet Show

Did not think the dancers, except for the Prima Ballerina, were very good, logistics of getting there with ship excursion was cumbersome, but how can you not see a ballet in Russia

Yusupov Palace

Very good tour with excellent guide. Well worth going on

OK but could have spent our time better

This was supposed to be a 3+ hour walking tour of the city. We found our guide to be redundant and hard to understand. Half way through, we went off on our own and later spoke with several people on similar excursions that did the same.
