This was our first river cruise and it was absolutely amazing. Another couple we met on an ocean cruise and two other couples invited us along. River cruises are certainly more expensive than ocean ones but it was worth every cent. We went from Amsterdam down to Budapest and loved every day. The ship is beautifully appointed in that sleek European style and spotless. We loved the intimacy as there were only 180 guests as opposed to the 800-1800 we usually cruise with. The staff were all outstanding. They went above and beyond to ensure we all had a great experience. They were like friends by the end of our tour. At every stop there were excursions which were included with our ticket and were top notch. Viking hires excellent and very knowledgeable guides. The great thing is we were divided into small groups rather than being herded onto big buses which is often the case on ocean cruise excursions. Oh, and let's not forget about the excellent meals! We had a talented and very gregarious Greek chef who created unforgettable dining experiences at every meal. The quality of the food was superior to that on the ocean liners. The entertainment, however, was not the same as what you get on the ocean cruises however due to the smaller venue but what they did provide was great. Besides since you are in a different port every day there are no days at sea to recouperate so we wouldn't have wanted events every night. When we came home friends asked what was our favourite stop and we had to say they all were! All in all we had a fabulous time and definitely plan on doing it again. There is a lot to be said to being on a river and looking out at all the little towns as you float to your next destination. Great job Viking! You deserve your stellar reputation.
