We have always wanted to do a river cruise and planned this with my two sisters and their husbands. We chose October because it was less expensive than other months and not too cold yet. We are all experienced ocean cruisers. My husband and I have been on 35 ocean cruises. The ship was lovely with a large lounge area where we were able to sit each evening and enjoy reading, talking and a glass of wine. We loved the pianist. The food was excellent- however 5 in our group of 6 became ill from food poisoning. The hotel manager was indifferent to our telling him, stating that "it was under control". On the excursions we learned of other sick passengers. Hand sanitizers Were not in evidence as on ocean liners ( after several days I noticed one in a recessed area by the dining room). Also with many sick passengers, we continued to be allowed to serve ourselves at buffets. The excursions were very good with excellent guides. However, every one just talked too much. It would have been nice to just soak in some scenery, a cathedral window, etc without the constant running commentary. The program director was outstanding, knowledgeable and caring towards the passengers. The concierge was also excellent- she actually knew things about the cities we visited (walk one block and see bus no. 12 on your right) unlike ocean concierges who only try to sell you a ship's tour and have no personal knowledge or do not share it. Although we loved the river cruise and are glad we did it, we would not repeat as ocean cruising is a far better value.
We had the least expensive cabin and would never get more than this category as we were never in our rooms. The cleaning was not nearly as thorough as on an ocean cruise. The room was very nice and actually bigger than we expected.
