  3. Avalon Imagery II
Got a late booking due to a cancellation with Viking. All travel arrangements were very good,in particlar the executive cars used to take us to from our airport.Thiis was a nice touch from Avalon. The Imagery 11 could not be faulted in terms of accomodation, friendly efficient staff, and the excellent quality of the food.Perhaps the only exception to this was the buffet breakfast where we think some hot food stood too long and consequently became lukewarm. The evening entertainment was adequate but could have been more varied and interesting,We did a Viking cruise on the Danube two years ago where a much geater effort had been made with the evening entertainment programme. The ports and shore excursions were well organised and we had some excellent guides.Strasbourg and Heidelburg were particular highlights as well as Colmar on the last day.Our big issue with the whole cruise however was that we felt the excursion programme was too crowded with not enough time for relaxation. For too many mornings you had to be off the ship at 8.30am,and then on top of this you had a late afternoon excursion which meant not getting back to the ship until 6.45pm.The latest dinner was served was at 7.15pm which gave you little time to get ready. We think Avalon need to have a look at this-for instance arriving at Cologne at 4pm when darkness was 4.30 was extremely disappointing-this was supposed to be a showpiece stop!Despite this we would certainly consider using Avalon again but would want a much clearer picture of the arrival times in places we were going to visit.Overall an excellent holiday but not as relaxed as we thought it might be
