The cruise on the Mississippi River on a paddle wheel style boat has been a 50 year dream for me. If you want lots of activities on board, people running around and lots of noise you will not not find it here.
If you want some privacy, quiet surroundings, great views, great staff, excellent food and interesting tours, then the America and her sister ships are just what you are looking for.
I should add, we are in our early 70's, enjoy peace and quiet and some activity.
America holds only 180 folks; mostly our age and ambulatory. The shore tours are very good.
The menu's (which you can adjust), were outstanding for each meal an had something for everybody. The variety was great and each meal was nicely prepared. I cannot say enough about how personable the young folks were. They were definitely there to serve.
Our tour departed New Orleans and traveled to Memphis for 7 days. American Cruise Lines has many other tours on different boats and rivers
Each tour includes shore tours, a guide "riverlorian" who gives a daily description of what is on for the next day as well as river history.
In the evening there is a cocktail hour before dinner. In the evening thee was entertainment, which was changed frequently using entertainers from the areas we passed through.
Service in all aspects: dining, stateroom, tours was excellent.
We are starting to plan for our next trip.
Our cabin was 150 sq/ft, choice of comfortable 2-twins or queen bed, with a private balcony. The bathroom was of good size and there was plenty of hot water. The cabins were cleaned and resupplied daily. The private balcony is where I spent plenty of time watching the sights along the riverside. A glass of wine in the afternoon watching the river go by, perfect!
