This was our first European river cruise, though we had already enjoyed a river cruise in China and an ocean cruise in the Mediterranean, both with Viking, both excellent. The level of service on board was outstanding, even given that we had the Explorer's suite. The spacious accommodations were truly luxurious, and we particularly appreciated the perks that were included (fresh flowers, bottomless minibar, laundry service, 24-hour room service, Silver Spirits package, etc.). Food was excellent as usual, with a wide range of entrees at dinner and plenty of choice at buffet breakfasts and lunch. Table service was friendly and efficient. On board entertainment was varied and interesting; we had a hands-on lesson in strudel-making, a glass-blowing demonstration, numerous talks on local history and geography, and a German Night with local musicians and local food. The resident musicians were a talented singer/guitarist and an accomplished pianist, each with an impressively wide repertoire. Shore excursions were well-chosen and well-organized, with personable and knowledgeable local guides, while leaving enough free time to explore the various ports of call on one's own. Overall the cruise was a very enjoyable, interesting and rewarding experience. We are booked on a Viking ocean cruise to the West Indies in December.
