we chose this cruise because we thought it would make a great change to sail to the Canary Islands instead of the med, our usual destination. We chose to sail with P & O having sailed on Britannia last year and absolutely loving her. Last year we holidayed with our daughter and grandson but this year we travelled as a couple. Because I have quite severe walking/disability issues we need to be near middle of ship for ease of getting about. Embarkation was quite smooth. Just as well because we had travelled down to Southampton, by coach from Co Durham which was an uncomfortable and tiring experience this year. Once at Southampton I had assisted boarding which is a lifesaver and I take my hat off to the people who provide this amazing service. Once we arrived in our cabin we immediately looked at each other with real disappointment, We had a superior deluxe cabin, but compared to same cabin on Britannia it looked so very shabby. Yes the balcony is bigger than the same one on Britannia but Ventura cabin looks in need of a refit and a good scrub. Bathroom is a good size but looks as though everything needs replacing. Really everything in our cabin needed to be spruced up, replaced or repaired. Sadly, this was the same right throughout ship. The worst aspect of the cruise, however, was the food we had freedom dining and ate mainly in the formal dining room, whilst, we only twice had to wait for a table with the famous 'buzzer', once seated we quickly found the food to be a huge disappointment. Quality of the food was very poor apart from breakfast which was very good. However, all of the staff on Ventura were all amazing, helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed the entertainment though, and thought prices of drinks were very reasonable. In conclusion the ship desperately needs a refit but can be very proud of staff. Would like to mention Edwin in Glasshouse who is a gem, smile to light up any room, and who served us with the best meal we had on Ventura which sadly we had to pay extra for because of it being a speciality restaurant
