We arrived in Rome one day pre-cruise and stayed two days post-cruise. That was barely enough time to scratch the surface and I can't wait to return to Rome. But the next time, I'll go in January!!! Rome is very crowded, even in September.
We took the train from Termini to the port at Civitavecchia. Our train ticket cost five euros and I'd do the same thing next time. The train was on time and comfortable. But if you have a lot of bags, perhaps you'd be better off with one of the shuttles that pick you up at your hotel and drop you off at the ship. This was my first time sailing out of this port and I had no idea how complicated it would be. See below.
Once we arrived at Civitavecchia however, the heavens opened. We were soaked. There was only one staff member present and he was no help other than to say that the walk would take at least 20 minutes. He didn't have a map. He didn't offer to call a taxi.
I knew what I was getting with an inside cabin. We did it to save money. But never again. I'll book a balcony from now on.
We booked a tour of the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums. It was self-directed. We used Viator to do a Moonlight Colosseum and Roman Forum tour and it was superb. And even better was an Eating Italy tour that we did in the Travastevere neighbourhood. It was one of the best tours I've every done in any port. It was well worth the money and I can't recommend it enough.
This port was amazing. We wandered the town and took in the sites. You could return here for a few days.
We took a taxi to the beach then wandered the town for a little while afterwards.
We could have spent two days each in Malta and Rhodes. There was so much to see here. Great port.
