When Viking began offering ocean cruise on brand new ships, my wife and I took noice of cruise that we could take in mid-winter. Finding one with beginning and ending ports gave us the ability to plan revisits to Rome and Barcelona plus first visit to Valencia and Malta; excursions in North Africa ports were also a plus. This plus our knowledge that Viking would be a good overall experience from river cruises with them made selecting this as our first "big ship" ocean cruise an easy choice.
Viking does a good job in presenting options for shore excursions and allowing you to book in advance. Its local guides were consistently first rate. One early day was devoted to cruising, and that was a welcome day of relaxation after some days of active touring in Rome, but the entire cruise was relaxing as Viking makes things comfortable for its guests. The food was always good, but the fact that the menu changed only weekly in the "Chef's Table" restaurant was disappointing as gave a limited choice.
The ship overall was such a fine experience we have booked another cruise for this February more to "go relax" than to be tourists.
Viking gave us an upgrade, so the cabin was beyond our expectations. The extra space in the cabin--a sitting area--and the double sink bath were appreciated, but the most memorable aspect of our cabin was the attendant who "came with it." She made certain everything was shipshape for us.
