Sail Date: Aug 2017

My wife and I were aboard the Silver Whisper (cruise 4723) departing Southampton, England on Tuesday, August 22, 2017, and arriving in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on Friday, September 8, 2017. It was our second Silversea cruise having earlier gone to Antarctica, etc, aboard the Silver Explorer.

The Silver Whisper rides very well. The engines are quiet and even in North Atlantic 12-15 seas, the roll was negligible. Many times, you had the feeling we had to be in port only to open the curtains to see we were still moving.

The public areas are all well designed and well kept. The dining rooms are large and comfortable. It's nice that guests can dine alone or in groups at any meal at any time. The maitre d's and wait staff are polished and friendly. The food - at all venues and in room service - was excellent, always brought at the right temperature, and sensibly portioned. First-rate. The "house coffee" at breakfast was not the best, leading many guests to order cappucinos/americano. The buffet area (lunch & dinner) could be larger. Le Champagne, the posh restaurant, is headed by an excellent maitre d' and staff and they serve a wonderful meal but the nearly windowless room doesn't have much of an appeal.

Port Reviews

Southampton

Excellent embarkation. Very well handled. Buffett lunch on board until suites were available.

Cobh (Cork)

We took a self-guided walk. The train from Cobh to Cork runs every 30 minutes. The English Market, St. Finbar's, etc are within walking distance. The Sin E pub serves excellent beer.

Dublin

The LUAS, the light rail, is a 15 minute walk from the pier, albeit crossing one busy road. It takes you to the center of Dublin. Recommended: Phoenix Park walk, Kilmainham Gaol, Grafton Street, Temple Bar.

Belfast

First visit. Arranged through a friend for a local to give us a "Troubles" tour. It's a must in Belfast but the ship's arranged taxi tours seemed quite expensive. The Titanic museum is well worth the pricy admission. Visit the Crown Liquor Saloon in the center city.

Corner Brook

Feel sorry for this woebegon place. We were cancelled out of the stop the day before and the Gaspe the day after and instead stopped here, presumably because it has a pier the ship can just tie up to, right next to a paper mill. There is really nothing to do in this place. We came on a rainy day and it was Labor Day, so everything was closed, but looking around and we took a walk around a nice lake, there isn't much here.

Quebec City

Easy walk to the Old Town, the funicular ($3 Canadian) will take you up and down to the Chateau, etc. Or, climb the stairs, not overly taxing to the reasonably fit. I recommend Rue Ste Jean for walking & shoping ... everything gets much cheaper outside the city walls. Excellent poutine at the Snack Shack, Rue Ste Jean.
