BACKGROUND

We chose this itinerary because it was Carnival's newest ship and we had been on Carnival's Conquest-class ships four times in a row, plus the itinerary was a nice change from the Eastern Caribbean routes we have done the last few years. That decision proved to be both good and bad, since our itinerary ports had suffered no damage from the 2017 hurricanes...but ironically our weather was poor during the cruise.

Cabin 4H

We had Room 10245, a Lido Deck interior with an upper berth. Nothing unusual about the room and we had no noise or A/C problems. I was stuck with the upper berth, of course, and since the beds were pushed together my climbing ladder had to be placed at the end of the bed, instead of the side where it's clearly intended. I eventually got used to climing up and down by about Day 3 of our cruise. Given a choice, however, I'll opt for a sofa-bed in the future.

Port Reviews

Ocho Rios

Too much hassle from "shore salespeople" wanting to sell you everything from excursions to weed to hair-braiding. We just went over to Margaritaville and paid our respects to the nearby statue of Bob Marley.

Cozumel

Due to reroutes from the Eastern Caribbean caused by Hurricane Maria, we were the seventh and last cruise ship to dock at Cozumel, making it very crowded indeed. We decided to forego taking a cab to a no-doubt crowded beach and instead returned to the ship for lunch and Cheers drinks. We went back to do some shopping during the afternoon when the port shops were least busy, so returning back through security wasn't too much of a wait. They don't hassle you as much as they do at Ocho Rios (or, say, Nassau or Labadee), but the shops by the Puerta Maya pier were very crowded early during our visit. It got better later.
