As a veteran of over 80 cruises I was excited to try Viking Ocean Cruises - something different and unknown to me. In fact, nobody in my party had previously sailed on Viking. We booked the December 17th 7-night Western Caribbean sailing on the Viking Sky. My party consisted of my wife and me (late 40's), my children (18 and 20), parents and in-laws (70's and 80's). We were celebrating my parent's and in-law's 50th wedding anniversaries. I wanted to stay away from the mass market big ships. The Viking date and itinerary worked out perfectly for us so we booked the Viking Sky. Our staterooms were Penthouse Veranda category on Deck 5 aft. As a qualifier, my favorite cruise lines are Regent, Seabourn, Crystal, and Oceania. I was not sure where Viking would fit in the mix - if at all. Viking Sky did not disappoint and was overwhelmingly impressive on just about every level. Let's start with the booking process. I booked all four cabins including airfare from Los Angeles directly with Viking. The process was seamless. I opted for the all inclusive Silver Beverage Package (I highly recommend!!!). The agent at Viking was terrific and follow-up was outstanding. I later turned the booking over to my travel agent.

We flew in a day early to Miami and stayed at the Hotel Beau Arts Miami (top floors of JW Marriott Marquis). We made these arrangements on our own. The air/sea department was a pleasure to work with and graciously made the custom air deviation for a nominal fee. Embarkation process with smooth and simple. Within a few minutes of arriving at the ship we were boarding the gorgeous Viking Sky. From the moment we walked on board and were greeted by genuinely kind staff handing us welcome aboard champagne we all knew that the week would be special. Viking Sky is very different than any other cruise ship I've been on with regards to design and decor. It is simply brilliant! The feeling is warm and welcoming with a Nordic simplicity. So many elements of classic cruising were incorporated into the ship's design including a full wrap around promenade on deck 2. There are too many innovative features to list, but the infinity pool and technology in the staterooms stands out.

Staterooms are spacious and adorned with an amazing TV complete with tons of movies and other selections. Our stateroom had a heated bathroom floor, hidden make-up vanity that popped up (my wife loved it!), large mirrors (including a full length one) and plenty of closet and drawer space - even enough to accommodate a much longer voyage than 7 nights. One of the best appointed and thought out staterooms I've ever experienced. Some impressive features of a Viking cruise are included unlimited WiFi (and it's great! I made many voice over WiFi calls without any problems), complimentary self-service laundry (unlike Oceania where you have to purchase tokens - tacky!), many dining options, no crowds, included wine with meals (even if you did not purchase the beverage package), and one complimentary shore excursion in each port. I won't elaborate on the shore excursions, but will say I did a combination of included and optional excursions and they all impressed me!
