This was our first ever cruise and I wasn't sure I enjoy being on a boat with so many other people. I traveled with my husband and four kids and stayed in adjoining balcony cabins - 7326 and 7328. My mom was in a balcony cabin on the other side of the ship.
The boarding process took a while (we had been up all night driving, so it may have not seemed as bad if we weren't so exhausted.) When we got on the ship, we wandered around a little waiting for the rooms to open at 1. If I were to go again, I would have brought another bag to stick the kids pillows/blankets in so we didn't have to carry them around. We had our luggage delivered to our room just before 5.
When we got into our rooms, I was pleasantly surprised that they were more spacious than I had been expecting. (Not huge, but not as tiny as I had thought they would be.) The adjoining rooms have a chair instead of a couch to make room for the door.
The balcony cabin was very nice and bigger than I had been expecting. We had adjoining rooms (7326 and 7328) so we had a chair instead of a couch. The couch would have been nice, but it was great to be able to go back and forth between our two rooms. We split the beds into twins and had the pullman bed, so we had three people sleeping in each room. We were able to have them pull back the balcony divider so that we had adjoining balconies also. The beds were not the most comfortable, but not horrible.
Costa Maya was touristy, but a good place to just walk around if you don't want to spend money or leave the port. They had flamingos and the dolphin encounter you could watch and the pool was nice and not very crowded. There were also entertainers on the street. It was a great place to wander around and people watch.
