If you crave all the trappings of going the tourist route with all the crowds, lines, LOUD music, BAD food and banal information exchange, by all means book the excursions.

I've always had a better time, learned and seen more, eaten well and met local folk who I can call friends, when I go it all on my own.

On other vacations I have done this with my wife and have always had a great time. Traveling with kids this year, we went the tourist route. Big mistake. My regards for their safety, was unwarranted and paid the price with just god awful shore excursions.

Nice. But always splurge for the balcony. Truly missed it this trip.

Airport. Dock. Nothing to see here.

Beach day! Found our own. Excellent.
