We did two Viking river cruises and we were very pleased with the entire experience and especially the quality of the tours and the knowledge and deportment of the tour guides. We have also taken a number of Caribbean cruises with other cruise lines. The Viking ports of call were second rate and the tours were very disappointing. We attribute much of this to the fact that Viking is new to the territory and they compete with the more established cruise lines for ports of call, docking locations, and tour options and tour guides. Although the ship and crew were up to Viking's excellent standards, the cruise experience was marred by the on-shore experiences. One particular case in point is note-worthy: I believe that it was one of the included tours in Columbia that we disembarked and we were put on a bus that drove 1 mile, turned around, and parked just across the street from our ship. Were then required to trek a rather arduous tour which was especially challenging to some of the less able passengers. At the end of the tour, after descending dozens of stone steps, we waited within sight of our cruise ship for a tour bus which drove a mile only to turn around and take us back to our ship. Quite a waste of time and money for us tourists and for Viking. In summary, we will always recommend Viking river cruises but not Viking ocean cruises in the Caribbean.
