I chose this cruise because Viking has a great reputation as a stellar cruise line. This was to be a memorable and expensive trip for my mom and me and we wanted to go first class!

The service was excellent. The river boats are somewhat small due to the size regulations of ships on the river (but not the guest rooms!) which made for a very intimate feel on board. It seemed that the entire staff learned each passenger's name by the end of the cruise, which was a nice touch. The food was superb and there was nothing that was missing. One could remain health conscious if they wanted to, but we went for it and enjoyed the amazing dessert foods too. I would totally do a river cruise again. I loved being in a new location each day and I really enjoyed traveling by boat on the beautiful Duoro River to each location.

Our cabin's bathroom shower drain had a horrible stench to it that wasn't able to be resolved because it needed plumbing work, which wouldn't be addressed until the end of the cruise. The downside to being on a cruise is that there were no other rooms to move us to, so that meant we were stuck staying in the stinky room, unlike if we were in a hotel room with the same problem. I understand that there are problems sometimes, but this stench was really really bad, and I would think that Viking would reimburse us or something to that nature to help make the situation better. All that was done is an apology by the housekeeping manager and that it will be dealt with before the next passengers get on the boat. That didn't help us or reassure us at all, during OUR trip that we paid for. That part was very disappointing and I would strongly hesitate to do a river cruise again because of that experience.
