This cruise sounded like a great way to enjoy French wines and food. My husband complained that it "didn't really go anywhere," but I was having far too good a time tasting wines and exploring picturesque villages to be much bothered about the lack of a true destination. As I would expect with Viking, all the shore excursions were good, but the standout on this cruise is the Arcachon Bay trip, which features a boat ride, first to an oyster farm, then to an excellent seafood restaurant. The Chateau Kirwan dinner was also very enjoyable, featuring a four-course dinner prepared and served by the Forseti staff paired with the chateau's exemplary wines.
The small French towns were lovely to explore. Anyone with a sweet tooth should not pass up the macaron shop in St.-Emilion; also look for the chocolate shop on the square in Libourne. We happened to be there on a market day, with vendors selling beautiful produce. Obviously, great wine is EVERYWHERE for the tasting and buying.
Viking's service is consistently excellent. Their staff work literally day and night to keep the guests happy. Dining on the ship tended "Frenchwards," which I enjoyed but husband did not. I appreciated the chef's efforts to present cuisine typical of the Bordeaux region. Each night dinner choices included a regional tasting menu (starter, main course and dessert). All were beautifully presented and delicious. The duck was particularly enjoyable. For alternative dining, check the Taste of Manfredi's set menu on the Aquavit Terrace. Breakfast is always enjoyable, featuring a comprehensive buffet plus omelet/fried egg bar.
I would take this cruise again. Husband disagrees, not because of any quibbles with Viking, but just because the Frenchness of the whole thing did not resonate with him.
Cabin was great just as we expected; we cruised on Viking Bragi in 2014. Our cabin steward was incredibly efficient; everything was great. The clean, Scandinavian lines of the ship are obviously continued into the cabins. There is a small refrigerator which is handy for preserving those beautiful macarons or whatever treats you might bring back from your shore excursions. Laundry service is a bit pricy but very speedy.
