Having taken two previous river cruises with a different line, we were under the impression that Viking were the top line to sail with so booked a week on the Budapest to Passau Danube Waltz. We travelled with friends and opted for two nights in Budapest at the Hilton on the Buda side. The hotel and location were perfect and we enjoyed our time in Budapest very much. However, when it came time to board our ship the Prestige, the holiday went downhill from there. For some reason the Prestige was nothing like the other Viking ships we saw on the river, or the one in our brochure or in the TV adverts. It appeared to be understaffed with attention from the crew being a bit hit and miss. We would often arrive back to the boat with no greeting or interest from anyone and were often left trying to attract attention from waiters to find us a table or get us drinks. We were expecting a balcony which we could sit on instead of the sliding windows and there was no lift leaving the many mobility impaired guests hobbling up and down the staircases! Also, the TVs in both our cabins only worked sporadically whilst on our other boats we could happily watch a large selection of current movies with no problems. The menu was static with only the change of a local speciality every evening and I cannot remember one exceptional dish. On our previous cruise there were different homemade soups and pates every night and much more choice. Also the trips were uninspired. Only one included and optional ones which came at a hefty price. For mobility impaired travellers the easy walking trips consisted of a coach into town where they were left to hobble around for a while whilst the guide pointed out coffee shops and where the underground system was if they wanted to get back to the boat! Very poor. Also, a majority of the passengers were American so don't bother with this one if you like a little glamour in the evening. Caps and shorts seemed to be the dress code day and night and the little entertainment was generally Sound of Music based. On the positive side Budapest and the Mozart concert in Vienna were highlights and the cabins were kept clean and fresh by hard working housekeeping. To top it all, guests are expected to pay tips for all the staff on top of the final bill before being dropped off at the airport to work out where we had to go and how to check in on the automated system! Overall we would not use Viking again and suggest other companies over this experience.
