I chose this sailing for our family because I was looking for a roundtrip sailing from Vancouver, through the Inside Passage.
We traveled as a family of three: 1 adult with 2 kids ages 12 and 14.
I chose Holland America's Nieuw Amsterdam mostly for the itinerary, but also because it was one of the only round-trip options from Vancouver.
The cabin was small, but fine. As a family of three, we barely fit, especially when the sofa bed was open. There was almost nowhere to walk. But we were fine, and we were only in the room to sleep, so it didn't matter. When the sofa bed was a sofa, it was fine and didn't feel too small at all.
We spent 2 nights in Whistler and 2 nights in Vancouver before we sailed.
Whistler was great for hiking, and for seeing where the winter Olympics were. Whistler is also a huge mountain biking community, so if that is something that interests you, go to Whistler.
We hiked the Train Wreck Trail which is just outside Whistler, and Harmony Lake Trail, which is at the top of Whistler mountain. Definitely ride the gondola up to the top, and if you dare you can walk the suspension bridge or ride the Peak to Peak Gondola to the other mountain.
In Vancouver we rented bikes from Yes and rode around Stanley Park. Yes only charged for the time we actually used the bikes, vs. pre-paying and guessing how long we would need them. The ride around the park was easy, though it was busy! Lots of people out there riding! There were plenty of places to pull over if needed, and take photos.
We also walked through one of the trails, the Tatlow trail, which had some amazingly huge trees and lovely scenery.
We visited Gastown and watched the steam clock, which was cool.
