Decent but could use some improvement. But better than the mega ships!

This was our 7th cruise with Royal Caribbean. Our last one was two years ago on the Allure, one of the newer mega ships, which we found greatly lacking in facilities and way over crowded. So this time we wanted to return to the smaller class of ships, such as the Liberty -- which is still pretty big w almost 4000 passengers. The ship itself was recently refurbished and in excellent condition. Very clean. Not old nor musty. The promenade is large, with late nite snacks available from the Cafe Promenade and Sorrentos Pizza. There is a Ben & Jerry's, but they charge you $3 or $4 dollars for a cone or cup. Still worth it for GOOD ice cream. Unlike the Allure, the Liberty can handle the number of guests so that you do not need reservations to attend any of the shows or clubs. Nice to be able to go from venue to venue at will. Besides the main shows, there was a pub with a singer/guitarist doing covers, a piano bar (think Billy Joel, though not as good), a Karaoke club below decks, and a lounge with live country music band. Poolside entertainment was mediocre, usually just a DJ or a couple piece "band". They really could have done a lot more to make the pool deck exciting. Pools were usually overcrowded with "party-ers", so you could only get some real swimming done at odd hours or on days with shore excursions. Jacuzzi whirlpool access was hit or miss; but we were able to usually get seated in the Solarium whirlpool which is much larger. They have a video screen for (old) movies on deck, but you can't see much until after sunset. Shipboard headliner entertainment was pretty good. The biggest disappointment was the food in the main dining room (dinner). It reminded us of a school cafeteria; the food was ill prepared, tasteless, and not restaurant grade. Beef was bland. Tenderloin medallions was just a slice of prime rib. New York strip was blah. They had no concept of salads: Cesar was just dry lettuce w hardly any watery dressing and a sprinkle of cheese granules. Capresse was served one nite only, with slices of sandwich tomato (not the Roma as described) on a bed of lettuce and some onion (?). Another cheese and tomato salad literally included one half of a single grape tomato! Mahi Mahi was served thin sliced scalapino style! Chicken cordon bleu was a fried breast that was sliced to insert a slice of ham and cheese. No sauce. No rolled up pounded chicken. Regular chicken was dry. Our table mates (we always like shared tables so as to meet people) felt the same way. Our waiter begged us not to officially complain, claiming that RC dinged the waiter instead of the chef for poor food! Our waiter was superb and tried as much as possible to please us, always offering to exchange our (bad) foods for something else on the menu. Just that there were not much to choose from! Deserts were mediocre. Fancy names, but school cafeteria presentation and quality. We realize that it is hard to feed 4000 passengers, but that should not be OUR problem! Why not offer a menu for the next night and allow us to mark a first and second choice; that would cut down on waste and make it easier for the chefs to concentrate on select items. The Windjammer buffet offered lots of food, but except for a dish or two, most of it was pretty mundane. Breakfast favorites like pancakes, waffles, toasts were always cold and unappealing. Omelets were cooked to order, which was a plus. Waiters in the buffet area were snap on at removing used plates and bringing beverages or coffee. I hurt my foot during the mandatory muster drill (got shoved while on the stairs) so I had very limited mobility. Medical did provide me a cane and ankle wrap at no charge. But it did mean having to change out our shore excursions for ones less strenuous. The crew person at the Shore Excursions Desk was less than helpful; not sympathetic to my bad ankle and not at all familiar with the various tour excursions. Could only read the same 7 sentence descriptions that we could read! Really hoped for some useful advice and suggestions. He did refund our orig excursion and sold us a (less strenuous) airboat tour. He made no suggestions for our stop at Cozumel; we opted to just stay on the ship and enjoy the (uncrowded) pool and jacuzzi. Our first excursion in Roatun was the beach trip. Beautiful calm water, clean beach. Security team watched our chairs and stuff when we were in the water. BBQ lunch was only burgers & franks, but no one expected much. Our other excursion was the airboat tour in Belize. A comfy bus ride through the city was very informative. The airboat was fun, but we did not see much in the way of wildlife (as hyped). Still, overall a good trip. We ate at a local grill back at the tourist terminal while awaiting a tender to take us back to the ship. Best food all week! When we went to the Crown & Anchor "loyalty" desk, the clerk there was also very unfriendly and gruff. We had heard that RC changed their point system some years ago, and that earlier cruises were not always converted properly to the new point system. She looked up our history, and told us that we were still only a couple cruise points away from our next tier. No way to adjust for those two points, even with a bad foot caused on the first day! Not even a kind word or two; or an attempt to see what could be done for us. So much for "loyalty". Our cabin Housekeeper was fantastic. Helped us stow our empty luggage under the bed and put them out for us on the last day. Always made sure our cabin was clean and we had fresh towels. So honest that he did not even realize the tip envelope was for him the first time we put it out. Most of the crew were very friendly and helpful (except for Excursions and Loyalty). Bar tenders were not outgoing friendly, but they were very busy, so I can't say anything against them. But if you requested something, they did their best to comply. Just that they were too busy to chat or make suggestions. The Royal people are very efficient with getting processed and embarkation; ditto they are very organized with getting off the ship at the end of the week. Royal took care of all of our travel arrangements and transfers. We flew into Houston the day before our sail date, just in case of delays. We were met in Baggage claim and driven to our hotel in Galveston in a limo! (We were expecting a shuttle van or bus.) Transit from the pier to the airport was very organized, and we were in a comfortable bus (with a lavatory). We strongly recommend hiring a porter at the terminal to deal with the luggage, both at arrival and even more so when you have to clear customs. With all the money spent on vacation, it is worth a $20 or so not to drag heavy suitcases around.

Cabin Review

Interior

Cabin 3V

Interior cabin, 10th floor, portside aft. Although the floor directly underneath the Windjammer buffet -- you would never know it. No noise from above. Standard smallish cabin. Double bed (you hide your luggage underneath). Some drawers and cupboards, plus a closet with hangers and shelves. Hint, bring along some wire hangers so you can hang as much as you want to. We did not use the Room Service dining, but were told that it was very good and much better than the buffet.

Port Reviews

Galveston

Stayed at the Holiday Inn overnite before the cruise. Was okay, nothing great. If you eat at the restaurant for dinner, the pineapple chicken breast is amazing!

Roatan

So much fun. Clean, safe beach. Security to watch our stuff. Clear calm water.

Cozumel

The shopping village is for cruise tourists, so no really good deals. Need to take a taxi to and from town to the port. We did the ruins tour previously; you cannot get close to the ruins so it wasn't really worth it.
