In celebration of my retirement, my husband and I, along with our two adult children made this "bucket list" trip. We thoroughly enjoyed the Westerdam – the ship, the staff, our staterooms, and the food were all high quality. Recently refurbished, the ship was in excellent condition and very tastefully appointed. The food was very high quality and we found a nice variety of selections. Also, many comfortable and attractive places to relax throughout the ship. We did not book excursions through Holland America, so I can't rate the HAL excursions, but the activities we booked privately were all excellent. We visited the Kroschel Animal Rescue center in Haines (we rented a car, which also allowed us to explore and look for bears!); we did a seaplane trip to the Misty Fjords in Ketchikan which was fantastic! We literally flew through a rainbow! Did the tram in Juneau and found a great place for king crab. Our family did not partake of all the ship entertainment - the only show we went to was the BB King room, but we did enjoy that. I would definitely book on the Westerdam again, and hopefully experience more of the on-board programs and entertainment.
We had ample USB ports and did not need all the electrical expanders we’d brought. One by each bedside, one or two at the desk. I honestly didn’t count them because it just wasn’t an issue for us at all. Plently of storage space in the bathroom, with a nice medicine cabinet and a shelf under the sink. The closets can convert to shelving too, and we made good use of that. We barely needed the two drawers that are under the bed!
Very comfortable beds, our stewards kept the room tidy and attractive, and we enjoyed the chocolate treats each night – alternating dark and milk chocolate.
We highly recommend a balcony stateroom for an Alaskan trip. We were able to relax, sip wine, and hear the naturalist when we wanted to (you can play the livecam on your TV and hear their commentary).
Took the Mt. Roberts tram on our own, which was an enjoyable ride. My husband is disabled, so we did not hike around or walk much once up there. We did find a great place for king crab - Tracy's King Crab Shack. Fun, informal, delicious crab cakes, bisque and of course legs - reasonably priced.
