I was looking for a really special cruise for my husband's 60th birthday and Ama Waterways was recommended to me by a small ship specialist. My travel agent understood that my husband and I are not "get on the bus and tour" type of people (even though Ama does provide riding tours). We wanted walking, hiking, and biking opportunities and Ama provided that. We also wanted to be in ports in the evening to explore the towns after hours. Ama's ship, staff, food, itineraries, service, was excellent.

The ports were amazing. We walked over 25,000 steps each day and loved every step. The food was delicious and local and we never found a need to eat off of the ship. The wines at dinner were outstanding and the wine stewards kept our glasses filled. The Bitburger beer was great and a must with lunch once I discovered it! The room was extremely comfortable - we slept like babies. The water pressure in the shower was great (one minor complaint - the water pooled on the bathroom floor after taking a shower so the bath mat had to be replaced daily). We had a TV that was also a computer in our room but we never used it. Did I mention the refreshing cool washcloths and flavoured tea when we returned from excursions? I could go on and on and on about this fabulous cruise.

If we had to find a "negative" the only thing I can say is that it was disappointing that the upper deck of the ship was closed for part of the cruise but that is not Ama's fault and could not be helped. The bridges are low in certain areas and the railings have to be taken down to allow clearance under the bridges. We also weren't expecting to sometimes have our cabin windows blocked by another ship when in port (they dock next to each other). But, seriously, those were the only negatives. My husband would add that he would like more educational lectures.

Cabin Review

Stateroom with French Balcony

Cabin B

The room was perfect. We would have enjoyed actual balconies but they were not available on this ship. The bed was very comfortable and the room was quiet. Chocolates were waiting on our pillows every evening and our water bottles were always refreshed. The room was very clean. The bathroom was adequate. There were a few times when the toilets stopped flushing but the engineer always had them back online quickly.

Port Reviews

Basel

We explored Basel on our own after dropping off our luggage at the ship. Basel is a wonderful city. Don't miss the art museum. Amazing collection.

Frankfurt

We walked around Frankfurt and enjoyed the street scenes. We were there on a Sunday so shops were closed. Probably a good thing, I saw a lot of things I probably would have bought in the shop windows! We returned to the ship for dinner and then took a wonderful after dinner stroll over the pedestrian bridges.

Miltenberg

Miltenberg was one of my favorite stops. I regret taking a bike ride along the river and not spending more time in Miltenberg.

Wurzburg

Wurzburg was amazing. We took the Castle Hike Tour organized by the ship and then when we finished, my husband and I went to the Residenz Palace where we paid admission and toured on our own. This town was bombed just before the end of the war and it is amazing how the people rebuilt such destruction.

Bamberg

The entire town of Bamberg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We managed two castle/palaces while walking on our own in Bamberg!
