Recently, I returned to Carnival Cruise Lines from a three year stint on Royal Caribbean. I was seduced by RCCL's mega ships, the quality of their entertainment and the novelty of their gorgeous mega ships. However, RCCL lacks something that Carnival has in spades - FRIENDLINESS and Horizon is no different. I'm a solo cruiser and on RCCL, I was very much alone. The staff at the dining rooms never even sat me with anyone else! On Horizon, I met friends on the first day during a tour of the spa and while I had dinner with them most nights, when I didn't, the staff at the dining rooms made sure I was sat with friendly people unless I asked to be alone.

Embarkation: This process was not smooth. I had a check-in time of 12:30-1:00. When I arrived at the cruiseport via Carnival shuttle, I had already been checked in at the airport. Thank God! Because the lines to get in were ridiculous. I would have missed my check-in window by hours. When we got to the port, since we were already checked in at the airport, we were ushered through to a line to go through security. I was not happy about being yelled out to hurry up. The staff overseeing embarkation were clearly under a great deal of stress and were taking it out on the embarking passengers! Not cool, Carnival - not cool!

I finally got onto the ship and it's a beauty. The Atrium was beautiful and friendly crew were selling lovely drinks.

Cabin Review

Cloud 9 Spa Balcony

Cabin 8S

The cabin had a beautiful, relaxing blue\green color scheme and was spacious and clean. I love the sunshine in a balcony cabin which is mainly why I book. My room was very quiet - as in I could not hear my neighbors, however, I could hear whatever was going on outside the room like it was in my room. There were some really loud people who walked the halls all hours of the night. One night, teenagers were partying right outside my door! My neighbor shooed them away. My neighbors were awesome. Access to the thermal suites and upgraded Elemis amenities are also perks of a spa cabin! A nice haven when the rest of the ship got too noisy.

Port Reviews

Miami

Miami is not my favorite city. I stay in Ft. Lauderdale prior to the cruise for a few days (sometimes a week) and shuttle in the day of the cruise. The best is to go back to the airport (FLL) and get checked in there then take the Carnival shuttle. It's cheaper than Uber or a taxi.

Grand Turk

I like grand Turk, especially since Carnival set up a charity for the stray dogs. I've never gone on an excursion there, but I like the beach and hanging out at the giant Margaritaville. The pool is amazing and it's a great place to people watch. Some of the chairs and umbrellas belong to the cruise port and are free, however, they are mostly the ones farther away from the water. You can rent a nice cabana close to the water for about $30. Bring cash because if you use your credit card, there are some pretty steep fees the restaurant charges on top of very expensive food.

San Juan

San Juan is just beautiful. If you can, take a walk around the entire city and visit the old forts. The views are breathtaking. There's a Starbucks just up the street from the pier and if you keep walking up that same street, you'll see hand made crafts, cigars and such. Take a peek into Eclectica for very reasonably priced jewelry and other beautiful goods from around the world.

St. Maarten

Don't count on much at the cruise port in St. Maarten. There's a small market place and a jewelry store, but that's about it. You're better off to hop into a taxi and go into town for better shopping and access to restaurants. The beach at paradise island is an adventure. You're taken there in smaller boats. Otherwise, I just stay on the ship at this port. If you rent a car, which I did one time in St. Maarten, be aware there are a lot of round abouts (rotaries) that are totally confusing. Even though you can drive in a complete circle around the island, the round abouts got me lost and I almost missed the ship leaving!
