Overall, a pleasant week-long cruise from Nuremberg to Bernkastel on a clean modern ship. We saw some beautiful countryside and historic places in the company of people we got on well with, but - due to a few niggles - we would rate this cruise only 3½ stars and might try a different company next time.

Excursions:

Sightseeing was our main reason for taking this holiday and Emerald’s included excursions were interesting with knowledgeable guides. Typically they were walking tours of old towns and castles, with an informative and humorous wine-tasting at the Residenz palace in Würzburg. Most allowed about half an hour’s free time, but in Bamberg the 1½ hours’ wait for the bus back to the ship was excessive. We took an optional excursion (€52 pp) to Trier, which unfortunately we found over-rated, though there were some stunning views on the return to the ship.

Cabin Review

Cabin Panorama Balcony Suite

Towards the stern on Deck 2, but little engine noise. Very clean, with ample storage space. Comfortable bed, but hard chairs. Decent-sized shower and plentiful hot water. Efficient air-con and reasonable wi-fi. The “French balcony” was basically an opening window, good for some fresh air and the view on the move (the lowest cabins only have small windows at head height) but note that the ship might be moored next to another.
