We are experienced cruisers and have been to many of the ports and have cruised on many different cruise lines. So, we expect mistakes, errors, and missteps, especially on a new cruise ship. MSC exceeded our expectations in errors, incompetence, and refusal to own their mistakes.
Embarkation for YC, is done in a private area. The other classes were in a area were disorganization seemed to reign. We were processed and on ship within 20 minutes of our arrival at Genoa terminal. We were escorted by a butler along with two other families. Upon boarding a female security officer said stop. I asked if there was a problem, she stated there was an issue with my card. The butler who was there to assist, was MIA. When I asked what the problem was, she put her hand in my face and yelled I would have to wait for management to fix the problem. I told our butler who looked nervous,to please help fix this. He then stated I was YC and they would handle it later. No apology for the assault or humiliation. There was no issue for the card and I received an apology from the staff captain five days later after I repeatedly asked to speak to a manager and they reviewed the tape. No further gesture of good will ever came nor would I deign to ask for one. Despite temptation, I kept an open mind about MSC.
The positives of YC were they escorted you on and off the boat, avoiding long and often unorganized lines. They also had an awesome lunge where one could have a drink of choice, high tea, or continental breakfast. There were always nibbles or sweets laid out. The YC restaurant, the food was very mixed to poor. Breakfast had nice items, but were often cold or flavorless. This included eggs Benedict that were cold and hard. On formal night, we got escortgoes that had a butter crust and no garlicky soft butter sauce. Steak was often over done despite requests for medium or rare. Most other dishes lacked any form of seasoning. The main buffet had better and more flavorful food. This was despite it being a blood sport to get food with people pushing or cutting the line. The pizza was excellent(even by NYC standards) and it was cool to watch them make fresh mozzarella.
