This springtime trip filled our bucket list to river cruise from Amsterdam down the Rhine River to see the old historic windmills, art museums, cathedrals, hilltop castles, and many historic cities. We did the pre-trip stay in Amsterdam and were within walking distance of the old city area, and the Viking staff were helpful in giving maps and directions to get around and recommended dining options. We opted for the day excursion to the city of Haarlem to see the cobblestone streets, old cathedral and the Frans Hals Art Museum. Greatly enjoyed the lunch with old style beer at their old church. The trip to Keukenhoff Gardens luckily did have (some) beautiful tulips on display with many more to soon emerge. I did the optional excursion to the Colmar Pocket WWII battle sites and our guide was quite knowledgeable on the history surrounding Lt Audy Murphy's actions resulting in his award of the Medal of Honor. All shore excursions were led by excellent local guides and Viking staff on the ship were professional and always helpful. Viking prepared meals were all delicious and included in the evening were regional specialties, and local wine and beer was provided at both lunch and dinner. We opted to moved about and meet others with each meal and the waitstaff were exceptional. If you chose to return to a same location for meals the same waitstaff would remember your name and favorite beverage choices and if you saw them at lunch would have it ready for you at dinner if you told them you were returning to their assigned table. Our fellow travelers - mostly from the United States - were all exceptional to travel with and share the experiences. The front desk staff were also all helpful and exceptionally knowledgeable. They worked hard to ensure our trip was one to remember.
Good sized cabin with veranda views, but, unfortunately used little due to time of year with cooler and wetter weather. We really like the way Viking lays out the cabin with bedside stands and charging for USB ports and room under the bed for the normal sized suitcases. The bathroom layout is also very nice and handheld shower wand and door that seals nicely to prevent water getting out on the floor. The anti-fogging mirror is also great.
Walking tour of the old part of the city led by a exceptionally knowledgeable local guide.
Tulips were just beginning to show; but, several indoor venues had beautiful flowers on display. A benefit of the early visit was the crowds were small.
Cold and windy walk through the old city area and to the Cathedral. Limited opportunity to go into the cathedral as a service was on-going.
Could not go into cathedral as a service was being held. Did enjoy hearing the choir and the organ from standing in the back.
