Although my wife and I are seasoned travelers, we were delighted at the opportunity to take our first-ever cruise on AQSC’s newest jewel to her crown: the American Countess. With high expectations, we embarked in late March for a 5-night trip out of New Orleans bound for Memphis. Summary? We were thrilled with every single aspect of this trip, one which exceeded our hopes far beyond our capacity to express it adequately - but here’s trying:
COVID: Because we are (at this writing) still in the grips of COVID, it is important to note that all – and I mean ALL – aspects of AQSC’s safety protocols gave us such comfort. From the boarding process – on through to all related aspects of the Countess’s safety procedures – all were simply top notch. We were provided PCR testing the evening prior to departure (and the administration / results reporting went flawlessly), our temperatures were taken each time we boarded and disembarked, and additional comprehensive safety measures were prevalent throughout the ship and trip. If the specter of the virus is a part of your cruise choice and / or decision making in this environment, I can say this honestly: this was the first time in the past year that I felt safe and comfortable – more so than in any other setting outside my own home. It was a luxurious experience on its own merit simply to feel safe – and kept safe we were. Thank you for that gift alone, AQSC.
THE SHIP: The Countess exceeded our highest expectations by light years. Of course, we had some trepidation going in about room size as novice cruisers – and they were for naught. Our stateroom nearly approached many a New York hotel room in size and surpassed most in amenities. We marveled at the clever lighting options, charging stations, the sizable bathroom, the very comfortable and efficient workstation, the lovely beds / bedding, and enjoyed cleaning services twice daily. we admired and enjoyed the library, the game room, the workout facilities, and so many more lovely nooks and crannies to be explored throughout her 4 decks (don’t miss the top deck for sunset!). The Main Deck is really a work of art in itself, with a modern and beautiful bar – with windows floor to ceiling – the theater, which felt like visiting a modern Copa Cabana, and the stunning and spacious dining room with its gorgeous chandeliers. We used the walking track several times a day, and the rocking chairs overlooking the front of the boat, and thus the majestic Mississippi River itself– were a favored destination and meeting place for all guests.
