We have been to most areas of the United States, but haven't spent much time in the Southeast, so we chose to take the Historic South and Golden Isles cruise on the American Star with American Cruise Lines. From the start, ACL took great care of us, with our pre-cruise hotel arrangements and transportation to the ship. Check in was a breeze (even with the Covid precautions the ship staff took) - this is one reason we like sailing on small ships - no lines, easy getting on and off in all the ports, etc.

Our cabin was very spacious and clean, with plenty of storage space for all of our things. We had an AA room on deck 2, which had a large picture window that opened to let in fresh air, which was so nice. The bed was very comfortable, and the shower size was much larger than on other ships. Our immediate feeling about the ship was that it was cozy, in a really good way. The crew were so helpful and personable, we immediately settled in and felt at home.

Probably my favorite thing about this cruise was the way they structured the itinerary for the maximum time in the various ports we visited. For instance, we left Charleston at noon, and after a lovely afternoon sailing by gorgeous homes and wildlife, we arrived in Beaufort in the late afternoon. We had a full evening to enjoy Beaufort, as well as the next full day and evening, not leaving until the following morning. This pattern repeated in Savannah, and Jekyll/Saint Simons Islands and it really allowed for a lot of exploring in these interesting ports. The excursions were also very informative, my favorite was in Beaufort where we visited a Gullah community with a woman who presented the tour through storytelling and song. A close second was the visit to Jekyll Island where we toured the historic homes and also got to see a sea turtle rescue center and hospital - it was fascinating.
