We enjoy cruising and wanted to try one on a US river and thought this would be an ideal time. We selected American Cruise Lines Columbia River cruise. Our intention was to check it out and book 2 future river cruises to take advantage of onboard discounts.

Pre-Cruise hotel was an appreciated feature and boarding was simple and well organized. Our cabin was clean, fresh and comfortable and very well serviced. Start of the river cruise was delightful. The dining room staff was friendly and eager to please but we quickly learned they are all new, totally untrained and there is no supervision. The “eager to please” waned as the week progressed. Some meals were very good, other meals were awful and nothing was ever served hot or even warm. Meal service never improved. Wine selection was however better than expected. As the days passed we noticed an overall lack of organization in customer service in several hospitality areas due to inexperience.

The excursions were suitable for the itinerary with prompt and friendly coach drivers and knowledgeable tour guides. We learned a lot about the region and were satisfied with that portion of the trip. The onboard historian/naturalist was terrific and a cruise highlight. Entertainment was what we expected and ok.

Cabin Review

Cabin was adequate size and nicely furnished. More like a hotel room than ship cabin, it had a reasonably sized bathroom and large shower. It was very well-serviced mornings and evenings by pleasant and competent staff.
