Dunedin Taieri Gorge Railway Excursion Reviews

A highlight of any visit to Dunedin is a trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway -- one of the world's greatest train trips through rugged landscapes and hand-carved tunnels.

Very enjoyable. Worth it to book via the ship so you are picked up right at the pier on the train. Beautiful vistas and views. Lunch was just ok (included) but they poured lots of beer and wine which was awesome.

Great staff of volunteers on the Train. The open air car affords great views of the canyon. If ONLY the Alpine Rail train had the same option.

As with most of our excursions, we were late departing (in this case due to the sheer logistics of the tour’s 300 passengers disembarking and transferring to the privately chartered train - this took an hour). We were directed to a particular wagon (so did not get a choice of a period or modern carriage). We had to climb 4 steep ladder steps to board our modern carriage with panoramic windows, with four seats grouped round a table. Clean toilet (one per carriage). The first of only two disembarkation stops was the picturesque, historic Dunedin Railway Station, with its elaborate Victorian façade, complete with towers. The galleried ticket hall has stained glass windows, a colourful tiled frieze and a splendid mosaic floor comprising almost 750,000 Royal Doulton porcelain tiles. The station is surrounded by lovely gardens, with other charming historical buildings nearby. The train then follows the route of pioneers & prospectors. It took quite a while to reach the more picturesque river gorge area. En-route two lovely volunteers served our picnic lunch. The tour included unlimited hot, soft and alcoholic drinks (beer and wine) throughout. We saw some pretty, but not spectacular scenery, and struggled to get a good view of the viaducts. Our photos were pretty rubbish (the observation car was too bouncy) - better just to sit back and enjoy. Also, we couldn’t really hear the onboard commentary. There was nothing at the second and final photo-stop where the train headed back along exactly the same route. The carriage was full, so I had to travel backwards and ended up feeling quite sick. Whilst we enjoyed a relaxing picturesque trip, with hindsight we probably would have picked a different tour, especially as were booked on the more scenic Southern Alps train the following day. A relaxing ride through the gorges. The only downside was the seating was a little tight. But I would recommend the experience.

Great fun and every seat was a good seat. The attendants on the train were all locals who were volunteers and the wine, beer, soda and food and treats never stopped coming. Fabulous views, interesting seat mates & a wonderful time.

The train ride was beautiful but hard to get on and off if you have a disability. The bus ride back was ok but the other bus on the tour kept breaking down. It was a little nerve wracking.

Disappointed in the Superior Package. We bought the superior package because we wanted to be picked up and dropped off next to the ship, but I still had to do a bit of walking. Also, since we were fog delayed, they kept threatening to drop us off in Dunedin and have us take the shuttle back. Didn't have enough time at the Train Station. Just 15 minutes, and I hoped they'd spend more time on the return visit. Maybe they thought they were dropping us off at the train station, so they didn't bother. Something about the crew timing out. Finally, they decided to change crew at Dunedin and return us to the ship. Train was hot, and it was only spring. No opening windows. They seemed to run out of Diet Coke, and didn't tell us. We kept waiting for it, and never got it. The merchants at Pukerangi waited all day for us, and I'd hoped to buy from them. But the train crew didn't let us off the train, because they were running late and timing out. Read Less

Do not use Good Company Tours. Completely disorganized. We almost missed the train trip. Then bus driver for City Tour had a load of unhappy passengers when he failed to respond to attempts to return us to the ship as he was running late, insisting on showing us things anyway. We were 35 minutes late back on board and barely made it. Since it was NOT a ship's tour, they will NOT wait for you. Do not be fooled. Take the Taiero Gorge Railway tour with another company and do the city tour on your own by foot; then take the ship's shuttle back. Read Less
