Don't Miss in Kodiak

Fort Abercrombie State Park: Hike, run or take a walk on miles of trails. Along the way, you can also check out a few World War II remnants, including old cannons and gun mounts. Be sure to stop and enjoy jaw-dropping views of the harbor below.

Fishing: Given that fishing is one of Kodiak's claims to fame, it seems appropriate that fishing charters are popular among visitors. Several tour operators offer outings that provide bait, tackle and the use of a boat.

Sightseeing: Whether you're scouting for bears on land or flying over Alaska's scenic landscape by plane, Kodiak's flora and fauna are not to be missed.

Kodiak Island Brewery: Make friends with the locals over seasonal small-batch craft beer. No food is served, but be sure to try the pizza at neighboring Sparrow's, which can be brought into the brewery. (117 Lower Mill Bay Road; 907-486-2537; open seven days a week, noon to 7 p.m.)

Kodiak Laboratory Aquarium and Touch Tank: Visitors can learn about Kodiak's ocean life at this aquarium. Highlights include a 3,500-gallon fish tank and a touch tank featuring crabs, sea stars and other fun creatures. (301 Research Court; 907-481-1711; open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the winter, and Monday to Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day)

Alutiiq Museum: History buffs will enjoy a visit to this museum, which focuses on the lives of the Alutiiq people. Exhibits showcase traditional clothing, baskets, and even the Alutiiq language, which is in danger of dying out. (215 Mission Road; 907-486-7004; open Tuesday to Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, noon to 4 p.m.)

Holy Resurrection Russian Orthodox Church: An easy walk from where you're docked, this blue onion-domed church holds services, but it's also an ideal place to visit for anyone who enjoys theology or architecture.
