Reichsburg Castle: Perched on a 300-foot promontory, it is the highest fortress on the Moselle and dates back more than 1,000 years. It once served to collect tolls from passing ships and was destroyed by the French in 1639; taking more than 40 years to rebuild. It has changed hands many times over the centuries and has a colorful and fascinating history revealed during a guided tour taking in the grand knights' hall, hunting room and dining room. Keep an eye out for the mermaid lamp -- which is said to bring good luck if you touch it and make a wish -- and the giant suit of armor. Outside, there's a great spot to take panoramic photos of the town and river. The climb to Reichsburg Imperial Castle is a steep 20-minute walk along narrow sidewalks. All ship excursions include transfers to the castle and back. Independent passengers can walk or take the 781 shuttle bus that runs from May to October and costs EUR2.50 one way or EUR4 return.

In Town: Close to the mooring point is the H.H. Hieronimi wine cellar, which offers wine tasting talks and is part an excursion offered by many of the lines. Next door is the Historic Mustard Mill, which dates back to 1810 and is the oldest continually operating mustard producer in Germany. It's also open daily for tours and tastings, and a jar, with flavors including honey, wild garlic, cayenne and Indian curry, is a fun souvenir to take home.
