Don't Miss in Wurzburg

Wurzburg's superstar attraction is the Residenz, a spectacular palace that was home to the city's prince-bishops, who held both religious and political power. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boggles with over-the-top baroque splendor. Fortunately, its main section was spared in the war, so you can gaze up at the world's largest fresco on the ceiling over a grand stairway; it was painted by Italian artist Tiepolo and his son. More of Tiepolo's work graces other areas, but there's plenty of other sights to boggle you, including million-dollar crystal chandeliers and incredibly intricate stucco work. Although many of the rooms in the wings required heavy restoration, they are still glorious, particularly the green lacquered room with its detailed parquet floor. Don't miss the chapel, located just before you exit the complex.

The bishops' previous digs are in Marienberg Fortress, which dominates the city from above. There's also a museum there housing a collection of sculptures by renowned local artist Tilman Riemenschneider, who worked in the late 15th century. His work graces the Dom St. Kilian cathedral as well. The Alte Mainbrucke, an arched stone bridge, offers great views of the fortress, churches and surrounding vineyards.
