Popular Things to Do in Nottoway, Louisiana
Don't Miss in Nottoway, Louisiana
Nottoway's White Ballroom: It's the star of the 53,000-square-foot plantation, dating back to 1859, when it was designed by architect Henry Howard for Virginia sugarcane planter John Hamden Randolph. The entire mansion is stunning with nearly 16-foot ceilings, 11-foot doors, 22 exterior columns, lovely handcarved Italian marble fireplaces and plaster frieze moldings.
There is also a small museum in Nottoway's basement. There's a nine-minute film about the plantation and the Randolph family, as well as artifacts and photos of its history.
Swamp Tours: Swamp tours in the Atchafalaya Basin, the latest wetland swamp in the United States, are popular.
Chapel of the Madonna: This tiny chapel claims to be "the smallest church in America." It's eight feet by eight feet, built in 1903 by a sugarcane farmer who prayed to the Virgin Mary for his son's recovery. (28160 Highway 405, Point Pleasant)
