State Castle: The main castle of Cesky Krumlov doesn't have a fancy name, but it does have some elements that elevate it beyond the typical tour. While construction on the elaborate structure began in the mid-1200s, the various families who lived there added different pieces. Chief among them: the Cesky Krumlov Baroque Theatre. The stage and inner workings are one of the world's best preserved baroque theaters and you can see the original orchestra pit, sound effects machines and other "technology" of the time. Another highlight is the Rosenberg ballroom, with colorful (and humorous) frescoes. If you have time to climb the 150 steps to the tower, the perch offers a spectacular view of the city's rooftops and surrounding countryside (Zamek 59, 381 01; 420 380 704 721; 9 to 5 p.m.; 50 Kc, CZK).
Historic center: Honestly, part of the charm of Cesky Krumlov is wandering on your own throughout the narrow streets. You'll find plenty of souvenir shops here, with many jewelers pushing necklaces and bracelets set with moldavite, a greenish stone derived from meteorite. Grab lunch or a gelato at one of the cafes in the main square.
