Food and Drink in Duluth

Duluth restaurants offer a few dishes local to the region. Wild rice porridge and other wild rice dishes, and beer cheese soup, are popular items on menus throughout the area.

With the fresh waters of Lake Superior an essential element for the production of regional beers and spirits, several breweries and cideries also operate in the area. Vikre distills a wide variety of spirits, and Canal Park Brewery taps several beers from its location (300 Canal Park) in the Canal Park District. Be sure to try the beer cheese soup -- served with a popcorn topping.

With a patio and Lake Superior views, The Boat Club (600 E Superior St.) features fresh fish, like walleye and other local fare. Located in the historic Fitger's Inn, The Boat Club is just one of several shops and food spots within the inn.

If it can be smoked, you'll likely find it at the OMC Smokehouse (1909 West Superior St.). Pork, chicken, beef and vegetarian options appear on the extensive menu. Be sure to try the beef fat fries.

Beaches in Duluth

Prepare for the cool water of Lake Superior at the sandy Park Point Beach. It has a seasonal lifeguard, who is on duty from early June until Labor Day, unless swimming conditions are poor.

Don't Miss in Duluth

Canal Park District: This lively area of Duluth skirts the Lake Superior shore and offers great views of both large and small ships arriving into Duluth via the canal. From the park, several lighthouses come into view as does the spectacular Aerial Lift Bridge. One could spend a day watching the ships come into port and the bridge lifting to allow them port access, but leave time to visit museums, shops and restaurants that line the streets. And with a shoreline full of beautiful small stones perfect for skimming the surface of Lake Superior, skipping rocks in Canal Park is a favorite past time. Canal Park District also serves as a staging point for accessing the Lakewalk.

Lakewalk: Skirting the shores of Lake Superior, the Lakewalk is a paved path that's popular with runners, walkers and cyclists. It starts in Bayfront Festival Park and connects with many attractions, including Leif Erikson Park and the stunning Rose Garden just about 2 miles and Brighton Beach 8 miles beyond.

St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center, The Depot: This historic former depot is home to several different museums and exhibits. Admission includes entrance to the Veterans Memorial Hall, the Duluth Art Institute, St. Louis Country Historical Society and the Lake Superior Railroad Museum.(506 W. Michigan St.; 218-727-8025; open daily, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Labor Day through Memorial Day. Closed New Year's, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.)

Glensheen Mansion: Once the home of Congdon family, this 39-room mansion on 12 acres of land on the shores of Lake Superior showcases design and style of the 20th century. Both self-guided and fully guided tours are available. Glensheen can be accessed from the Lakewalk. (3300 London Road; 218-726-8910; open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)

Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center: Situated in Canal Park, right along the canal and on the shores of Lake Superior, this free visitor center, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, tells the story of shipping. Check the vessel schedule at HarborLookout.com to plan your visit to view freighters as they pass through the canal and watch the Aerial Lift Bridge operate. On display inside the museum are exhibits focusing on the shipping industry on Lake Superior and the Great Lakes. (600 Canal Park Drive; 218-720-5260; open daily, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; until 9 p.m. during summer)
