We are currently on the cultural Cuba cruise, and I would not advise anyone to take any cruise to Cuba unless you can be in Havana for 3 days. The Cienfuegos and Santiago ports are very lame. Havana was fantastic but the drive is over 6 hours on very poor roads. We will try to plan another trip to Havana only in the future. The ship is beautiful, but seems to shake more in the ocean than other cruise ships we have been on. We had a junior suite that was very roomy with great bathrooms. The beds are very hard, but they gave us a topper to make it more comfortable. The internet was very slow and movies kept freezing up at night when more users were on. The premium wine selection was not good but the drink package was worth it for great mixed drinks. A big miss was not showing the college football National Championship game and it could not be watched anywhere on the ship. The food in the 2 specialty restaurants was excellent and the pool side grill had a great hamburger and tuna burger. The other restaurants were just ok. Room service seemed to run behind schedule most days for breakfast, so order at least 30 minutes early. The fitness center is small and we would have liked to see more weight machines but it seemed to work for us. On the plus side, Janice our cabin steward was excellent and we had fantastic bartenders in I Made and Eddie. The spa staff that did the pedicures were fantastic. Read Less

Continuous ship computer problems. Restaurant reservations repeatedly disappeared. Long wait times for bar service. We had the wine package, and at dinner, refills were tough to get. Long lines at the buffet. Items often ran out and were not replenished for many minutes. The principal training much of the staff has received is to repeat the mantra "I am so sorry. I do apologize for the problem." Staff is pleasant and friendly, but that only goes so far. Cabin has insufficient storage space. Bathroom had a heated floor, which was nice, but pitifully low water volume in the shower. Food was average, with the Chef's Table being a huge disappointment. We had back to back cruises, chosen for the itinerary. Too late, we discovered that the ship would leave port at 2pm from three stops, making it difficult to see much. We have taken over twenty cruises, on 9 lines. I realize that Viking is not aiming for the luxury market, but I cannot comprehend the rave reviews it has received from some travelers. First and last Viking cruise. Read Less

We have cruised previously with both Seabourn and Silversea, as well as Viking River and we chose this cruise because we had read superb reviews and we were curious about Viking Ocean. The Viking Sun is a beautiful ship with absolutely stunning common areas. Housekeeping and cabin service is superb. Everything is clean and shiny and new. The problem is that service elsewhere on the ship is inconsistent. In the specialty restaurant, Manfredis, service was flawless. But elsewhere, it certainly was not. Buffets are often the only option and lines are long and slow. The buffets are set up so that there is a very small serving area resulting in a single line for all. If the main restaurant is closed (or full, as it was for us on a few occasions), the lines get very long. Pool service was downright poor. It seems there are not enough staff members to provide nearly the same level of service you get on Seabourn or Silversea. While the entertainment systems in the cabins ofter lots of choices, the other amenities in the higher end cabins are disappointing in comparison to similar cabins on Seabourn and Silversea. The mini bar Viking advertises in many of their pricier cabins consists of a few airline bottles of cheap liquor, a few beers and sodas, and not much else. There are only a total of two glasses of any kind available in the cabin. There are things that Viking does very well, but overall, if you have sailed on Seabourn or Silversea, Viking really doesn’t compare. Read Less

Looked for a hoilday cruise after Christmas. Chose Viking for a luxury experience. Embarkation a breeze at POM - on the ship in 15 minutes. No lines. No problems. Boat was not at location on paperwork but was easily found Room was not ready on time due to a prolonged immigration delay for staff. Understandable. PJS was very nice. A fantastic location. Very quiet. Meals on board were very good. Enjoyed every meal except the Chefs Table. The Asian Panorama was average. The wine selections was very good however. We had Silver Beverage package. Enjoyed all the different red wines, Spouse likes her Chardonnay.. Linda Clancey the Cruise Director was fantastic. The shows were very good, Also enjoyed the enrichment lectures. Port and shore excursions met our expectations, Really enjoyed the Lamanai Mayan site and Cichan Itza, Negatives: 1, Ship motion - seas were rough from Miami to Key West and first day at sea from Key West to Belize, Maybe small size of ship made this worse? 2, Key West port - Mallory Square was closed due to damage. Couldn't tender due to wind/waves. Got into a dock after another ship left. Port was very crowded. 3. Cozumel - short time in port. Overall would highly recommend Vking Read Less

We arrived a day early to San Juan and stayed at the Sheraton Old San Juan. Nice hotel...great location. Unfortunately for our departure the Sea was not docked in town but at the less convenient pier. Embarkation was EASY...but remember to keep your Brazil Visa with you, they want to see it when you board. We were onboard within minutes of leaving the cab ( $25 USD from the hotel). We arrived about 11:30 and our cabin was ready by the time we had signed up for a beverage package, made some dinner reservations, adjusted a couple of tours. Disembarking the ship was so easy...we were at the old town pier this time and were off the ship, luggage collected and on the bus bound for the airport in 15 minutes!!! We had to go through customs / immigration again in the ship's terminal even though we had done that on the ship in St. Thomas. That too was VERY efficient! Be aware there is an agriculture check of all luggage BEFORE you check in...the bus drops you right there and they off load your luggage to be scanned and you walk through any hand luggage larger than a purse. We chose this itinerary because we wanted to see/experience the Amazon. We had previously done a small ship (Vantage Cruises) in Peru on the Amazon and enjoyed it but had been a little disappointed that we did not see much wildlife. Viking's Brazil itinerary really showed us the scope and enormity of the Amazon but not a lot up close and personal. Rain forest hikes had too many people and we often could not hear the leader (why dont they all use quiet boxes) OR so many people by the time we passed what the leader was describing we could not find it or it had flown/scampered/hopped away. Viking needs to find vendors who will offer smaller groups...use the same number of buses but 2x the guides and it would be wonderful! We did one DIY excursion in Manaus and spent the day exploring the river, meeting of the waters, fishing, hiking, swimming with the pink dolphins, and indigenous people...all from a small boat. It was wonderful, the highlight of the trip BUT I was nervous about getting back in time for sailing away ( the small boat certainly could have had engine problems). I have not figured out how to get a small group experience which are always superior and usually a value and the safety net of it being ship sponsored!!! The included tours were OK....we took optionals in most ports...make sure to see the inside of the Opera House in Manaus. In some ports we managed to also do the included tour!!! It is great when schedules allow for that. The only tour that was really bad was in Tabago...it was snorkeling...however the boat was crowded and they did not have enough equipment for those that did not have their own. The snorkeling was very disappointing in time and what we saw. The second spot was just beautiful knee deep sandy bottom water!!!! Waste of time and money!!!! The Caribbean ports were fine....why didn't Viking offer snorkeling in St. Lucia? Perhaps the mega ships that were in port had all the vendors reserved. We did a very nice catamaran sail! The ship and her crew from the Captain to the deck hands were wonderful. Unfortunately for us, I do not think another cruise will EVER be able to compare with Viking's Inaugural World Cruise. I did not realize how spoiled I had become!!! This cruise did a fun Equator Crossing....on the SUN the crossing was extraordinary including Cruise Director,Heather Clancy, ending up in the POOL!!! WE had a lovely Brunch on day on this cruise....on the Sun it encompassed the entire pool deck and Wintergarden. The entertainment on the WC was really varied and often included local shows ... it was fine on this cruise but no WOW's. For me one of the really different aspects of this cruise was the role of Cruise Director...Ms. Clancy really seemed to part of the "TEAM" who were creating the experience on this cruise I really felt the cruise director was more 'entertainment' and announcement focused not really engaged with senior management. Just an observation...and to be fair I do not remember much about the cruise director on our Baltic and Beyond Cruise. The Staff of Viking ships is extraordinary. I do not think NO is in their vocabulary. They go our of their way to remember names. It was so fun to board the ship and see familiar faces. We love sea days...always enough to keep us busy. The Speakers on this trip we very good. The naturalist was not "out and about" as I expected but he was very approachable when we did see him. The food was good, sometimes excellent....at times the main dining room seemed very crowded and the waiters working too hard!!! Has Viking cut down the number of wait staff? Breakfast service in the main dining room was SLOW but we only went on Sea days so we were in no hurry!!! I missed the mushroom soup in Manfredi's but we had outstanding meals there everytime. The fish special of the day NEVER disappointed. We had the Silver Spirit package and enjoyed good wines and great cocktails throughout the cruise. I needed to do my homework more thoroughly and we should have stayed in lodge if we really wanted to experience the Amazon. This was our fault certainly not VIKINGS....they delivered as promised. We had a great time and can't wait until our next cruise!!!! Read Less

Read many good things about Viking and wanted to try a different cruise line. The ship was beautiful. The passenger to size ratio was great. Never felt crowded. The light interiors were a welcome change from other lines we’ve cruised. Cabins were very nice. Loved the heated floor and mirror in the bathroom. Dining was mixed. We liked the World Cafe. Food was very good with lots of choices. The grill had a nice selection. Tea at the Wintergarden was enjoyable. We didn’t feel the main dining room functioned like a well oiled machine. Service was not smooth, the kitchen was very slow, and the food was average. The specialty restaurants were better. A poor first meal at the Italian restaurant was resolved with a second visit. Other than that the crew was excellent. The ship was great. The included excursions were very good. The tour guides were knowledgeable and very friendly. We’ll definitely do another cruise with Viking. Read Less

We like Viking. It was going to the Azores which we had wanted to see and had never been to during any of our travels. We have sailed on Viking Ocean 4 times now. This was a cruise that did not live up to our expectations. The cruise director was very talented herself but pretty much dominated the cruise and did not let the other entertainers perform to the best of their abilities. The food which is usually excellent was still good but the service in the restaurants was unusually slow. Disembarkation was truly a disaster. Handled by the shore excursion manager it could not have been worse. This is the second time we have had this manager for shore excursions on Viking. Unfortunately he is not the best and often unorganized or ill prepared. In addition he is not accessible and does not speak English very well which makes him hard to understand. The ship is excellent and most of the staff would do anything for you. Since this cruise had 8 scheduled sea days there should have been more activities. We would be unlikely to take such a cruise again however we most likely will travel again on Viking. Read Less

We chose this so we could end in Barcelona to spend Christmas there. Also I liked that I had never been to any of the cities that the cruise was porting and I wanted to have a child free experience. This was my second cruise ever and so I do not have a lot of experience with other cruise companies or itineraries. My other cruise as to Alaska and on a large ship which was nearly 15 years ago and I swore never again. However I am more than pleased with the cruise with Viking. Very small by comparisons but large enough that you do not see the same people over and over. The ship was very quiet and only announcement made in the rooms was the safety briefing. The rooms are small but well appointed. The cities where we ported were small enough to walk right off the ship and explore. Mainly you would wake up in a different city every day. Service on board was exceptional. The food was decent but they did not cater to special diets well. One woman I met was extremely allergic to milk and dairy and she said they had not milk alternatives like almond or soy milks. I am gluten sensitive and they were not that flexible. Viking does offer excursions included with the price. We found these to be designed for much older passengers than ourselves. We were the exception and well below the average age on board. We did pay for one excursion in Algiers - save your money and time. It is a good port to plan a spa visit on board. Nothing to see there. It is a dirty city with limited information and history. The paid excursion was for the Casbah tour which everyone on it thought we would be taken to a market. Not so - it is a contrived and not interesting tour except for the Bahia house. Which they jammed about 100 people into a 1400 sq foot house. Save your money at that port. The cities they stop at are easy to do your own excursions and so save money. In Trapani we went up to Erice on our own and it was well worth the trip. The cost to take the continual sky tram was 9 euro round trip and gives you a wonderful view of the city. I would go back to Trapani and Sicily after this trip. The excursions are designed for fearful travelers or limited mobility travelers. Overall it was a fantastic vacation. We also opted for the Silver beverage package - which I highly recommend if you like to try different wines and after dinner drinks. Excellent work out facility and wet spa area. Read Less

We chose this cruise to try the Viking Ocean experience and we loved it! The staff was warm and friendly and they couldn't do enough for us. We loved the design of the ship and the comfortable areas for conversation, the books all over, the music, and the total ambiance. The food was excellent. Since we only cruised for one week, others who were already onboard had booked the specialty restaurants in advance and we were unable to make reservations on the first day we were able to access the online system. However, once we were onboard, the restaurant manager and the general manager went out of their way to accommodate us. We dined in Manfredi's twice and loved it. We also dined in Chef's Table twice and did not care for it. While the food was beautifully prepared, we didn't care for all of the dishes and no other choices were available. We also enjoyed the food and service at the Restaurant. We thought the entertainment was ok but we didn't choose this cruise for entertainment. For the most part, we enjoyed the excursions (2 optional and the rest included). If we had been on a longer cruise, we would have liked a little more drawer space. We will definitely do another Viking Ocean cruise. Read Less

Our past experiences with Viking have all been positive. We decided to enjoy our vacation with Viking...The staff was friendly and approachable at all times..The food is excellent, with a great variety of offerings... Unfortunately due to rough seas, we were not able to enjoy the pool and hot tub areas....the anticipated yoga and Pilates classes were a disappointment...they were not up to a standard that I have enjoyed here at home. Not worth the additional charge in order to participate. The speakers were interesting and we enjoyed Dr. Fuller and his offerings about the Vikings and their history. Our tour and lunch in the Azores was cancelled to our disappointment...we had been looking forward to learning about the agriculture and farming activities of the island. The substitute offering, which we chose, was just average and although it included lunch, we found that to be mediocre. We have eaten several meals in Portugal when on previous trips and enjoyed the local food immensely...The offering on this Azores tour was not representative of the excellent food that is available. All in all, we had a wonderful crossing and would do it again! PS. the disembarkation in Miami was not well done...probably due to the US customs people not there on time...but hoards of guests, with their travel gear, waiting in the hallways was not a good experience. We finally went up to Deck 7 just to get out of the crush. Since we had to vacate our rooms, they were not available, but you couldn't even get off the elevators at Decks 1 or 2, because of the crowded corridors of people waiting to disembark. Read Less
